21 & OVER MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:1.5/5   Review By:  Bryan Durham  Site: Times of India (TOI)

The film tends to lose direction now and then with unnecessarily serious discussions and vague, philosophical cross-references that question the US justice system. You might find yourself wishing that they would just get on with the action instead because that is the film’s strongest point. There are plot holes too. For example, no explanation is offered as to how an ordinary businessman (Matthews) is suddenly an expert at wielding arms and ammunition like a commando. Watch it if you like action films and are a Dwayne Johnson fan.

Unfortunately for 21 & Over it ends up as a gimmicky trick. Starting off as a high school campus drama the film soon turns into a nauseating ordeal that makes the genre look redundant and obnoxious. The problem with the film begins from its very first frame. Every scene and dialogue seems way too rehearsed, like an attempt to compensate for the lack of a good screenplay. Most of the jokes are uninspired and awkwardly annoying. 21 & Over feels like a rehashed and forced attempt to recreate the splendor and spontaneity of The Hangover without any success.

To start with, this movie will generate varied reactions from two categories of people. First being those set of people who have seen the massive hit Hangover and second being those who havent. From the writers of The Hangover ( John Lucas & Scott Moore), this film is recurrently in the style of the aforementioned movie. If it had been only a matter of style, it would have been fine but here the content is also more or less the same. That repetitive old story of friends on a rampage in a single night simultaneously going through much chaos and witnessing debauchery only to realize their true bonds of friendship. On the brighter side, the length of this film is suitably apt which makes it a watchable one. Teen audience will find it funny and enjoyable along with those who havent seen the The Hangover series. For the rest, they can choose to either watch it or not. Verdict: Funny in parts, predictable on the whole.
