A Thursday has stray moments like these that make you sit up and take notice. But mostly the film lurches about without enough focus. The screenplay attempts to reveal the rot in the system everyone from the cops to media to bureaucrats and the public hungrily consuming the drama on social media is indicted. But the writing doesnt have the sharpness or complexity that this required. The takedown of the media is especially feeble. Clearly television anchors and their bosses are Bollywoods new favorite villains remember Dhamaka? Here the boss exploits his anchors terrible predicament for TRPs.

On the whole, A Thursday is a fair entertainer. The decision of the producers to premiere the film on an OTT platform is a wise one as its success in cinemas may not have been easy because the film does not have the usual dose of romance, entertaining songs, family drama, etc.

Despite a rather predictable backstory, A Thursday redeems itself with its powerful emotional arc and social commentary in the latter half. It touches upon a relevant issue that will resonate with women across the globe. This may not be an edge-of-the-seat thriller that evokes paranoia or fear but it dares to make an important point and that alone is its victory. Khambata cleverly makes ample use of the social media within the film to take the story forward and it works. The film also makes an apt observation of clickbait journalism and the business of ‘breaking news.

There is no concrete reason you should not be watching this one at all. Of course, there are a few lazy bits and that will bother, but the climax will help compensate.A Thursday is a Yami Gautam show and she does bring her A-game on. But the set up ditches her a bit. You can give this a chance on Disney+ Hotstar.

Personally, Id have been more emotionally engaged with the meaty debate at the heart of A Thursday, if the film wasnt so relentlessly trying to set our feelings on fire. But I will admit, Im still eager to catch the reactions and chatter around the films core conflict once it is out.

The life-long impact of sexual violence and the laxity in meting out justice to culprits, which is at the heart of this movie, come up right at the end. Yes, the issue is worthy, but this ludicrous plot and its even more ludicrous execution is nothing but a series of eye-rolls.
