Sudhir Mishra has written a story about the state of affairs prevailing in todays time when social media dictates how we think and what we do. Of course, the story is one of convenience but thats not much of an aberration because the focus is on the evils of social media, which the audience would be able to identify with.On the whole, Afwaah is a well-made class film with weak commercial prospects.

There is no doubt that loose chatter and spreading stories that are not backed by facts and truths can often affect people’s lives and society at large. This film reasonably manages to bring to light the impact of such afwaahs; however, the climax seems a tad convenient and could have left us with a stronger impact. €œRumour hai par phikar kise hai, na phailaane wale ko na sun ne wale ko.€ This is the sad truth. So, think twice about what you’re going to believe and go check out this Afwaah.

More than a film, Afwaah, Sudhir Mishra’s first theatrical release in five years, is an act of courage and a fervent plea for sanity in a time of bigotry and intolerance. It may not be saying anything that we do not already know but the fact that it dares to say what has got to be said, and without mincing words at that, is deserving of unstinted applause.

This film, too, looks very apt for OTT. With larger-than-life films taking over the big screens, we wonder if Afwaah will find audience in the theatres.Afwaah is the perfect representation of what our society has been witnessing recently and hopefully, through this film, rumourmongering and circulating fake news mindlessly will reduce! At least thats what we can hope for.

Occasionally, the film begins to spell itself out, even sermonise, what the makers think is necessary to communicate to the audience. Afwaah is a reflection of the moral corruption that the society has undergone. It makes us sit up and realise the rise of noise as well as the eroding space for argument and logical thinking as bigotry makes the public gullible.

Afwaah might be a realistic tale but it gives in to poetic justice eventually. It is a classic case of a great, noble and bold attempt gone wrong. Its honest and daring themes and statements go awry simple because the written word doesnt translate to the screen with the same effervesce, grit and gumption.

The second half of Afwaah is not as firmly structured as the first, nor as finessed, but the point it makes is powerful and unequivocal. The effect is startling considering how servile most of Bollywood has become and how even liberals in this industry, with some honourable exceptions, have either fallen silent or have been walking on eggshells around political themes in contrast with some of Indias other film industries.

Sudhir Mishras timely and thrilling Afwaah examines the reach and repercussions of the rumour mongering industry in a rabidly assumptive society. Mishra’s liberal voice and social consciousness reflects in his works as does his virtuosity in crafting edge-of-the-seat drama amidst revolting realities. A combination of these attributes shape Afwaahs significant but on-the-nose commentary produced by the genres biggest patron, Anubhav Sinha. The events of Afwaah are all around us but Mishra pieces them together to highlight the hypocrisy and predict hazardous times for everyone on the social hierarchy.
