Kids born in the 90s, who have watched the cartoon version of this story, will find Aladdin a bit too hard to get accustomed to in the beginning, but otherwise, the film sans its minor hiccups is congenial and establishes the feel-good factor from frame one and maintains it till the curtains are drawn.

This isnt to say that the new Aladdin is a failure – it most certainly isnt – but Id imagine this is simply a case of Ritchie trying to get back into Hollywoods good books after the back-to-back box office failure of his last two movies. That being said, Aladdin is a vibrant adventure, featuring three excellent central performances, and laced with intelligent subtext about class – like Gully Boy meets Han Solo.

Ritchie was not the best choice here. Someone like Baz Luhrmann with experience in lavish musicals would probably have given the Aladdin remake that grandness and the heart that it deserved. The big moments just do not feel sweeping and aside from A Whole New World on the magic carpet, the musical numbers fall visually flat. The film wants to wow you constantly, but just ends up tripping over itself. Onto the live action The Lion King then, which hopefully will not be a misfire.
