Do you remember when Tom Cruise ‘didn’t do sequels’? Before Mission Impossible 2, it was something he’d never done.

Since that point though, there is an increasing sense that the actor is looking to franchises as the basis for his box office strength. Not only has the mission impossible series now delivered over $2 billion, the most recent two films have been by far the most two successful of the series.

In Jack Reacher, there seemed to be a real belief that the sequel would build on the limited success of the first which had successes at the US box office but certainly succeeded internationally. Unfortunately, the actual delivery of the sequel and the disappointing end product (Review – Jack Reacher : Never Go Back).

So now we turn to 2017’s summer release – The Mummy. The rebooting of the franchise which began in 1999, seeing sequels with The Mummy ReturnsThe Mummy : Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and the Scorpion King Sequel. It’s hard to imagine any attempt to reboot this series only being planned as a single film.

Interestingly it appears that Universal are planning to not only reboot the Mummy series, but to do it in a way that creates a shared universe around characters from classic horror tales (For example – Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein, Dracula). When you see that Russell Crowe has been cast as Dr Henry Jekyll in this modern day tale around the Mummy, it does hint at a Marvel / DC style universe franchise attempting to be created.

So back to the 2017 The Mummy…The teaser trailer is available here…

More to come when the full trailer is released…
