Anek is a confused and confusing political thriller. It is the fourth film in writer-director Anubhav Sinhas 2.0 avatar the first, Mulk, dealt with communalism, Article 15 with casteism and Thappad with sexismLargely, however, Anek is undone by trying to be too many things. The film is a welcome step towards more diversity and representation in mainstream Hindi cinema. But now we need deeper dives.

Anubhav Sinhas direction seems to cater to a very thin section of the elite audience only. He falters on two main counts: the narration is confusing, and the human drama fails to touch the heart. On the whole, Anek will find very few takers even among the class audience and will, therefore, flop at the turnstiles.

While it is a relief that Anek is not characterised by the ugly jingoism of recent Hindi films, the answer to divisive cinema cannot be an unimmersive narrative. Visually spectacular, politically blurred, well-meaning, preachy yet impassive if only there was more to say than this about a Hindi film that has cared, and dared, to go into a part of India towards which most of the rest of India is indifferent.

But there is too much to do in order the form a base and too little time. What holds the film back is its screenplay which fails to generate interest one hour into the film. For a film set in the hotbed of insurgency, it was important to keep the audience engaged throughout. If it wasnt for its cast, Anek wouldve been a test of your patience. Thankfully, it isnt.

All in all, Anek is a decent watch. If political thrillers fascinate you, it might as well be your weekend pick. However, if you were to go keeping the same expectation as Article 15, then you might return disappointed. But we would like you to keep the two films distinct and enjoy both as two separate dishes. Who knows, Anek might actually be the conversation starter yet again in the era of political thrillers. Doesn’t seem too distant, does it?

With conversational dialogues interspersed throughout the narrative, Anek brings you face to face with the undercurrents of discrimination and alienation from mainland India that exist in different pockets of the northeast. The film is engaging, but it could have done with a tighter screen time. Its a tad slow pre-interval and comparatively fast-paced post that, and unpacks a lot in that timespan.

Anek is a rare commercial film that spotlights Northeastern Indian stories, and goes out of its way to refuse to condemn guerrilla fighters as terrorists. Here, violence is not a spectacle, but rendered as the inevitable symptom of subjugation and intolerance. The film might be didactic in tone, but it is the kind of didacticism that injects political integrity into a cinematic landscape sorely lacking a backbone
