If you can overlook those problems there are some pleasures to be had, chief among them the joy of taking in Irrfans performance. Its an effortless job makkhan as they say in Hindi a performance so light on its feet, it never feels like acting. He invests Champak with genuine humanity, despite the uneven script. You cant help feeling especially appreciative knowing that he made the film while critically unwell. In the end I feel like Angrezi Medium is one part clunky, and one part enjoyable. Its not a perfect film far from it but I will admit I came out with a smile. Im going with a generous three out of five.

I found myself teary at the end of Angrezi Medium. I was moved by Champaks emotions. I was also moved by Irrfan, his strength and his resilience against the deadly disease he is currently battling in an audio clip promoting the film, he called it an €œunwanted mehman.€This is an actor to treasure. Watching him, as Marie Kondo would say, sparks joy. And we can all use some of that.

On the whole, Angrezi Medium is not half as good as Hindi Medium. In fact, it is too ordinary to really create an impact on the box-office. It will not be able to keep its distributors in a happy zone, and this is not just because of the attendance in cinemas being adversely affected due to the coronavirus scare and the closure of cinemas ordered in some parts of India.

The first half of the screenplay is more engaging then the second, but, while trying to fit in too many subplots, the story goes quite haywire. There are some fantastic moments in the film, and sharply written scenes between the characters, too, which in turn, prove to be the highlights of this drama. However, the story is far too convenient and has inconsistencies that are hard to overlook, but Irrfan’s exceptional performance makes it worth the watch.’Angrezi Medium’ does lose its grip on several occasions, what it does not lose is its hold on the emotion that it is trying to bring out, and the message it leaves you with.

Currently, films with middle-class minutiae humorously showcased are the new favourites at the marquee and given its comic and emotional twists, Angrezi Medium is quite the family drama worth earmarking for watching with your folks.

Angrezi Medium, its sequel only in spirit, is a father’s endeavour to fulfill his teenager daughter’s wish to study in London. The crazy extremes he goes through to make it happen is what drives Homi Adajania’s new film as well as brings it down.At the end of its ensuing pandemonium and abundant melodrama, Angrezi Medium reveals little understanding of ambitious learners or parenting woes.

Like Raj from Hindi Medium, Champak too can barely speak English, a language that continues to have aspirational value across India. This though is an extraneous point in Angrezi Medium. Champak is not quite as wealthy as the BMW-driving Raj, but he is financially well off. Money too is not the driving force of this plot. The focus of Angrezi Medium is Champak’s single-minded commitment to Tarika that leads him to instrospect about his conservatism while she reconsiders her somewhat conventional interpretation of taking flight.
