The film really gathers steam in its second hour, when Scott embraces his powers and sets out to pull off the heist hes been training for. It all culminates in a cleverly executed climax on a toy-train set. Nice change from those world-flattening finales of The Avengers movies!Im going with three out of five for Ant-Man. Theres plenty laughs and some neat special effects. But what the movie needed was real edge, and a willingness to take bold risks.

Ant-Man’s effects are often astounding – for one, flawlessly recreating a younger-looking Michael Douglas early on in the movie. Then of course, the plethora of ant scene renderings as well as other sequences, like Lang’s journey into the sub-atomic realm. But this isn’t just a VFX flex-fest.Guardians of the Galaxy ushered in a new flavor of superhero films – of fairly ‘ordinary’ people who learn to do extraordinary things – and this brings a more human angle to the film. Ant-Man continues the trend. Oh, and don’t miss Marvel legend Stan Lee’s cameo too!

The real draw of ‘Ant Man’, however, are the incredible special effects which take use of the hero’s shrinking abilities. Every shrinking sequence is entertaining as hell, and the final battle with the villain, instead of destroying another city takes place inside the bedroom of a little girl, and it’s executed with humour. There’s little to complain about the film, aside from the 3D so if you’re in the mood for a good time at the cinema make sure you see the film in 2D only.

The most ingenious sequence comes near the end, during a climactic battle between two miniaturized dudes, which toggles between their perspective and that of normal-size people. What appears to the combatants to be a noisy, screen-filling, no-holds-barred struggle looks, at human scale, like a minor disturbance in a room full of toys. Perhaps this is a metaphor: Trapped inside this big movie is a small one, trying to get out.

Its all rather heartbreaking, and while the script still retains his flourishes (and screen-credit), the overwhelming feeling is one of squandered promise, despite the scene-stealingly good Michael Pe±a. Ant-Man slides around the grooves of a record spinning frantically in a nightclub. But its all a bit been-there-done-that, a bit Eega, even. Its a pretty watchable light movie, but ah, it could have been a Wright movie.

Impeccable performances by Michael Pena and Paul Rudd? Check. Hilarious quips from the characters? Check. Epic action sequences? Check. What else do you want?! Go watch the tiny superhero- now!
