ARGO MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:4/5   Review by Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)

Argo, directed by Ben Affleck, is simply a terrific movie. For his third outing behind the camera, after those excellent Boston-set thrillers Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Affleck chooses this amazing story of one of the most improbable rescue missions in modern history€¦the kind of story youd never believe, except that its based on true events.Argo takes some liberties with the truth, exaggerating certain incidents, and inventing characters who didnt exist in the real story (Alan Arkins film producer is reportedly a creation by screenwriter Chris Terrio). But Affleck gives the film a lived-in, authentic feel with minute period details and dialogue that never feels scripted.Im going with four out of five for Ben Afflecks Argo. Youll come out feeling like youve just enjoyed a wholesome, satisfying meal. Dont miss it.

CIA exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez comes up with a plan to extract six American diplomats from Iran at a time when the Iranian public’s ire against their overthrown Shah and the US is at its most volatile. Set in the 1970s, Argo is based on the true story of the extraction of six diplomats from the Canadian ambassador’s house, where they’re hiding. Affleck’s film is being seen as a serious Oscar contender and with good reason. The film doesn’t favour one side over the other. Also, the dramatization is not without its light moments. You will sense a fine balance and an acute attention to detailing, something that’s pivotal to a film of this genre. Watch out for certain powerful crowd scenes and set pieces that grab you with their sheer intensity and absolute terror. You will gasp in awe at the pains taken in casting actors who resembled the actual players of this story the closest, as they are featured during the end credits.Tip-Off: You may not like this movie if you cannot stomach graphic scenes of violence, or if you are easily offended by explicit language.

With witty zingers flying around more than bullets, Argo, at some points, feels like the funniest non-satirical political film out there. If you want to see the vilification of the United States for its historic double-handedness, this film is not for you. Rather than standing on a soapbox about his countrys foreign policy, the lead characters is absorbed with the task at hand. However rather than portraying a West Asian race as barbaric, its highlights the excesses of political upheaval.Watch Argo for the interesting handling of a period political drama and the powerful performances.
