The duos screenplay is kiddish and thats putting it mildly. Logic has no place in this drama and it appears that scenes have been pieced together without caring for the final product. If the romantic part of the drama is devoid of excitement, the action part is quite lifeless, and the comic part, pathetic. In fact, as the drama unfolds, the audiences stare in disbelief, unable to understand what they should make of the proceedings. Everything appears so contrived and convoluted that it gets on the viewers nerves. On the whole, Arjun Patiala is a poor comedy which will throw up tragic box-office figures all over.

The movie’s writing, direction and execution become increasingly childish and pointless in the second half, as it stumbles towards a hotch-potch of a climax. Thankfully, the makers do not resort to cheap, offensive or vulgar humour in a desperate attempt to make you laugh. Film’s music is average except for the peppy dance number ‘Preeto’. Spoof comedies can be a tricky affair and this one is way too underwhelming to tickle your funny bone for full two hours.

Arjun Patiala is designed as a movie-within-a-movie, a satire on ridiculousness of cinematic clich©s and done-to-death genres, with cop films as its area of focus. The Diljit Dosanjh-Kriti Sanon film couldnt have chosen more wisely there is a lot there to be mocked; or as suits will tell you, it is a low hanging fruit. It is a pity then that the film falls into the same trap, but is far less fun than a Simmba or a Dabangg, or even a south Indian dubbed cop movie a genre that has kept more than one Hindi film channel afloat over the years.

But the pizzazz gets lost in this low-rent, tepid attempt at raising laughs. As do some performers who usually add heft to anything they are in. Seema Pahwa as a corrupt local property queen and Ayyub as a knife-wielding thug are wasted. As is Pankaj Tripathi in a blink-and-miss role. By the time it ends, youve forgotten the early laughs. What should have been a rollicking Patiala peg turns into a pointless pauwa.

Kriti in a sari looks as ravishing as Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na. And she’s just as good an actor. Ronit Roy, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Suman Pahwa are fantastic! But the characters are let down by Ritesh Shah’s and Sandeep Leyzell’s cliched story. In its attempt to take potshots at everybody — from film directors, producers, reporters, cops and politicians — Arjun Patiala quite doesn’t add up to be the spoof it was meant to be.

The only tolerable scenes are the ones between the screenwriter (Abhishek Banerjee) and the producer (Pankaj Tripathi). I would rather see a film on this dynamic than a spoof of 80s/90s formula films.Varun Sharma repeats his buffoon act and Kriti Sanon reprises her pretty small-town girl role. Both deliver been-there-seen-that performances. Diljit Dosanjh is left holding this foolishness together. To his credit, he doesnt amplify his performance as the affable local law-enforcer but lets the jokes find their way out.Sorry, did I say jokes? I wasnt amused one bit.
