Arrival is what youd traditionally describe as a sci-fi film, or an alien movie, although frankly its more than that. Much of the pleasure of this film lies in watching Amy Adams figure things out. Clocking in at just under two hours, Arrival is that rare film that you dont want to miss even a moment of. You literally dont want to blink or look at your phone in the fear of missing out something small, something important. Its an intelligent film and thats not a bad thing.Dont read anything more about it. The joy of discovery is beyond everything else. Im going with four out of five.

While the logic behind how the linguistics expert manages to decipher the alien language is fuzzy at best, the true purpose of these intelligent extra-terrestrial beings is a jaw-dropping reveal that warrants a repeat viewing to find all the breadcrumbs left in the lead up to the crescendo. Bradford Youngs soothing cinematography and J³hann J³hannssons hypnotic score lend more weight to all the emotional beats laid out by Villeneuve’s mastery of the craft. Don’t let the deliberate pacing dissuade you; Arrival makes you ponder the implications of time, love, life, and death, and the co-relation between communication and the human experience long after the credits roll, making it one of the unmissable films to watch this year.

Not since Midnight Special or Never Let Me Go has a science fiction film – or indeed, any film – been this terrific. Awarding it a bag-full of Oscars come February would be too puny a recognition, too inconsequential; it deserves to be shown in museums, to governments, in schools. Missing it should be outlawed.

Based on Ted Chaings short story Story of Your Life, Arrival blends thought provoking drama and science fiction to form an intoxicating, unforgettable audio visual experience. This is one of those films you wont stop talking about and passionately recommending to your friends, and also a rare film of the year that actually makes you want to head back to the theater.
