Lakshya Raj Anands direction is fair. He has not been able to make a wholesome entertainer as he has excluded even some basic and necessary elements like patriotism, sentiments and comedy from the narration. On the whole, Attack is a dull entertainer. It will be patronised by the masses but will not be liked by the classes, womenfolk and families.

It is John Abraham who does all the heavy-lifting, literally heaving the bad guys across the room, and shooting exact holes into foreheads with both hands. We know exactly how things will pan out, no strain on the brain. Everything is straight-forward, no complicated characters, no morally ambiguous situations. Thats what desi superheroes are for, arent they?

On the whole, ATTACK – PART 1 works due to the novel concept, action, VFX and John Abrahams first-rate performance. Hence, despite the limited buzz and a weak climax, the film can work at the box office and take advantage of the clean two-week run.

Science and sorcery – the two key omnipresent components of Attack – demand a willing, and complete, suspension of disbelief. That is easy to make peace with. Importantly, to the credit of debutant director Lakshya Raj Anand, the fast-paced hostage drama stops well short of being an all-out, dreadful assault on the senses. Attack, as it simplifies the science of heroism, certainly has its moments, but it could have done with a few more.

Whatever might be the measures taken by an earlier John Abraham film, there seems to be a renewed bloodlust in Attack, thats actively trying to court the masses of Uri and The Kashmir Files. Abrahams next, Siddharth Anands Pathaan, will also see him invoking the tricolour. While question marks loom over his status as a viable star, expect his convenient patriotism to show up in a more naked and ferocious manner. John Abraham is no longer playing nice.

To sum up, Attack: Part One, is an engaging watch, from start to finish. It could have been even better if some of the characters surrounding Johns Arjun Shergill were given more thought and leg-room.

If you are getting free tickets and have nothing to kill your time, go ahead. Or else wait for the OTT release and then join me in the regret concert. We will play the 200 songs Shashwat Sachdev has composed for this one.I share my birthday with John Abraham and it only makes me sad to see him make such choices. Go for it if melodrama dressed as Sci-fi patriotism is your thing.

Watch Attack for its attempt at something truly novel within the purview of Indian cinema; its slick VFX; its ability the futuristic techno elements of its concept; the bike chase during the climax, followed by a clap-worthy stunt with an airplane; and finally, John Abraham doing what he’s tailor-made to do. These portions combined are enough to tide over the bumpy bits of the movie. I’m going with 3 out of 5 stars.
