Ample laughs. Enjoyable jokes. Witty one-liners. Engrossing drama. Strong emotions… This well-crafted entertainer promises and delivers non-stop entertainment.Any shortcomings? Yes, a few moments in the first half could’ve been sharper… Also, the narrative could’ve done without a few characters.Final word? BadNewz is a full-on entertainer that wins you over.

On the whole, Bad Newz is far from being great news at the ticket windows as it is not a patch on the first (Good Newwz) in the series. It doesn’t have a great comedy drama but what will see the film do average business are Vicky Kaushal’s acting, ‘hot’ Tripti Dimri’s appeal, music, dances and novelty of subject. It will fare fairly well mainly in the big cities and in the better multiplexes but business in smaller cities and in ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres will be below the mark. Publicity: very good. Opening: average to good. Opening ranged from the ordinary to good.

It is probably the director’s way of letting on that Bad Newz does not intend to be anything more than that – a light snack, part sweet, part sour, rather than a full wholesome meal with a wider range of flavours. That isn’t a problem. Who minds a little fun, froth and flippancy? It is the absence of genuine crackle in the average, single-note confection that Bad Newz is that does the film in.

What can Virk, or anyone else do, with the script being so enamoured with Sabton Vadda Akhil: I mean, how can you even dream of a Bollywood rom com in which the hero is not given a chance to show that he is all grown up, look ma? He gets his growth arc and learns his lesson; everyone else deals with it. I’m not complaining, though, because Kaushal is a delight from beginning to end, and ufff, tauba, those moves burning up the dance floor? Maar daala..

Bad Newz resembles an Instagram filter that loses its sheen after first use. The surface is shimmery and looks glossy, but there is no material to sink your teeth into. The writing is shallow and flat. The punches never land. The film even tries satire and parody, but the gags are so weak that they lose air before taking off. Some of the lines feel like leftovers from a prime-time TV laughter challenge audition.

All in all, Bad Newz stays true to its title. It is just a good looking film that shines on the surface. It could have been so much more. The makers barely touch upon the moral policing a woman at the centre of heteropaternal superfecundation may suffer. On the other hand, they could have easily done away with the many songs that keep popping up every now and then. The film solely belongs to Vicky and his Tauba Tauba but let’s caution you that you’ll need to sit till the very end if you want to catch the actor suavely grooving to its cool beats.

Summing up, Bad Newz is an over-the-top comedy served well by credible performances by the three leads. Watch it for the goofy laughs and don’t take its science too seriously.
