The film does become a tad sentimental in its final act, but I will admit those bits work too more than once I had a lump in my throat. The makers tie up the loose ends nicely, and although emotion replaces comedy as the film draws to a close, its hard not to stay invested in these folks.Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for Badhaai Ho. It rings true for the most part, benefits from terrific casting across the board, and uses a winning combination of humor and genuine, unmistakable feeling to go to a delicate place where Hindi films have seldom gone before. Dont miss it.

On the whole, Badhaai Ho is a super-hit! It is a big box-office fare in the small film space. In a way, it is, therefore, landmark cinema. Writers Akshat Ghildial and Shantanu Srivastava, director Amit Ravindernath Sharma, producers Junglee Pictures and Chrome Pictures (for their conviction), Ayushmann Khurranna, Surekha Sikri, Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta and Sanya Malhotra are all heroes of this multi-starrer blockbuster. This small film can easily cross the 100-crore mark because it will be loved by the young and the old, the masses and the classes, the men and the women, the girls and the guys, the rich and the poor.

Badhaai Ho is, refreshingly and triumphantly, a film about the parents. It belongs to Neena Guptas Priyamvada, nicknamed Babli, who looks luminous even when exhausted and does too much talking with her eyes as she looks at her husband fondly or at her children longingly. It belongs to Surekha Sikri, who plays a fierce and frequently immovable mother-in-law. It belongs to Sheeba Chadda, playing a soup-slurping socialite who looks down at the absence of an apostrophe.

Badhaai Ho is fashioned as a comedy of manners, as it goes about showing us nosey neighbours and nasty relatives and garish weddings in the very middle-class society that the Kaushiks inhabit. And as long as the film is in the hands of the veterans, with Gupta coming up with a pitch-perfect performance as a loving wife, mother, dutiful daughter-in-law, while also being her own person, and Rao keeping in step with her, it works.Where it slips is when it takes off on a tangent, with Nakul (Khurrana) sparring with his wealthy girl-friend (Malhotra), and her snooty, pastel-hued mother (Chaddha).

Director Amit Ravindernath Sharma’s Badhaai Ho deserves unstinted kudos. It not only dares to tackle a tricky theme, it does so with laudable finesse. This film is a worthy addition to the raft of adventurous, sure-handed genre-benders that the Mumbai movie industry has been delivering of late in a welcome rush.

The older generation proves to be wiser and more resilient in dealing with the facts of life (the one about using protection produces some good jokes). Badhaai Ho has a strong pre-interval section that nicely sets up its characters and their dilemma. But then it allows itself to get derailed as Nakuls flapping takes centrestage. Nakuls anxiety conveniently resolves itself in time, but not before he sets out on a collision course with Renees mother that adds nothing to the movie.

‘Badhaai Ho’, much like its subject, puts a fantastic new spin on the usual. In a new-age rom-com, youd expect Ayushmann and Sanyas love story to take centre stage, but when you see the middle-aged parents blush with romance, the entertainment really becomes novel. The music by Tanishk Bagchi, Rochak Kohli and JAM8 is top-grade, too. Tracks like ‘Badhaiyaan Tenu’, ‘Naina Na Jodeen’ and ‘Sajan Bade Senti’ fit the mood perfectly. The film engages thoroughly, while still making a social statement. Even though the story has a limited scope, the detailed writing, the finesse of Sharmas direction and some unforgettable performances, make this film an absolute winner.

A film based on such a micro issue naturally has limited scope. One would imagine that once the initial shock and embarrassment from the unexpected event fades, there would be little to go by. But this one trudges along by leaning on a parallel track €” Nakuls relationship with his colleague Renee (Sanya Malhotra) and his attempts to impress her society doyenne mum (Sheeba Chaddha) which give legs to the story. Badhaai Ho also hits emotional peaks when the sons accept the situation at hand €” and in time, even begin to acknowledge and appreciate their role in the whole business

On the whole, BADHAAI HO is not a laugh riot but emerges as a complete family entertainer with emotions as its USP. The film leaves you with a smile and at the box office, it is at an advantage. It releases during an extended weekend and families are bound to come in large numbers. Its surely a ‘Badhaai Ho’ time for the makers and investors!
