Supported very ably by his two leading ladies, Ayushmann Khurrana cuts a sympathetic figure as another not-instantly-likeable loser. Watch how he tears into his father for passing down the baldness gene. Never understating the troubling blackface of Bhumis character, the truth is that the film is consistently enjoyable. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for Bala.

Amar Kaushiks direction is lovely. He has made a fine entertainer and has extracted good work from out of his principal actors. He deserves praise for mixing a good message with so much entertainment. But he shouldve kept the comedy quotient as potent in the post-interval portion too. On the whole, Bala is a sureshot hit. It has abundant entertainment value and a lovely message €” and thats a fine combination.

There is enough to enjoy here and yet Bala doesnt land with the sophistication and satisfaction of Amars first film Stree. Largely because the writing doesnt have that subversion and cleverness. Stree also grappled with important issues but the film didnt hit you on the head with it. Bala is more simplistic and on-the-nose. A running voiceover by Vijay Raaz explains to us what we are seeing. His addition to any film makes me happy but did we really need someone to say: Kismat hi sulabh shauchaalya jaisi hai.Bala is an aspiring stand-up comic. He entertains people by mimicking Bollywood stars, especially Shah Rukh Khan. This film is like his act fun in places, flat in others and not enough sticks.

Bala benefits no end from the quality of the performances as well as from its empathy for the idiosyncrasies of small town folk, but it is the writing that is its Samson’s hair: the film’s power flows principally from it. The screenplay is indeed King here. Yes, with a capital K.

Still, Khurranas Bala is an achievement. Hes perfected the art of playing people who are not instantly likeable, and he works the characters kinks to the point where we can see them, and yet sympathise. This is an unfiltered, bare performance, unafraid to be seen as ridiculous: this kind of shucking of vanity, even if it is self-aware, is rare amongst Bollywood actors. Bala is human, he is flawed; he is one of us. He makes us smile. So does this delicious line, Kaushik throwing in a politically acute curveball, just like he did in Stree €” poora Uttar Pradesh chal raha hai bhagwaan bharose, aur bhi chal jayega. Or words to that effect. Mazaa aa gaya guru.

Director Amar Kaushik tries to drive home the message about how our society mocks those who are different. The film tends to get preachy in the second half with the message about societal prejudices hammered down repeatedly. This takes away from the films fun quotient, but the story continues to engage the viewer, mostly due to Ayushmanns stellar performance. But overall, ‘Bala’ remains a light-hearted comedy with situations that are relatable. Just like the films message, ‘Bala’ is beautiful even with its flaws, and never fails to entertain.

On the whole, BALA not only entertains thoroughly but also delivers a very important message that will surely be lapped up by the audiences. At the box office, the film will surely benefit thanks to great word of mouth and brand Ayushmann. It will emerge as a profitable venture for the producers and will make its entry into the 100 crore club.

It offers more than what it promised, its doesnt touch-and-go the issue but explains it with detailed sequences. If youve Ayushmann Khurrana in your film, you cant ignore the whats good section without his mention in Ayushmann, we trust. All said and done, Bala along with bringing in a house full of laughter also has something very important to say. Its a significant message draped under the entertaining layer of humour. A MUST WATCH!

Bala, a warm and fuzzy comedy about a balding young man who pins his self-worth on his diminishing strands, gamely takes a nick at vanity and unattainable beauty standards that fuel low self-esteem. The film champions the cause of inclusion, diversity and acceptance without making it painfully didactic

Overall, Bala is a feel-good, highly entertaining movie that will definitely make you laugh out loud, though we are not sure if the message of self-acceptance and being comfortable in your own skin is something that comes through convincingly. But one thing is guaranteed – you will walk out of the theatre with a feeling of empathy for those who are inflicted with this condition and a smile on your face.
