The film is a decent watch for those, who for some weird reason may crave for the 70’s melodrama. It boasts of an archaic story and a predictable plot, with the actors spouting done to death dialogues throughout. Loren looks good but is too wooden. Also, barring cinematography and music, other aspects of the film are way too mediocre and cliched for your liking. Sadly it’s 2015 and this formulaic drama has nothing new to offer.

Maybe the intention of the film was to tell us that ladies who dance for a living also have the right to respectability, which is wonderful, but a mothballed plot and an even more mothballed treatment isnt the way forward. €œKya tum mere ghar ki izzat banogi?€ Yes, I heard this line. I kid you not.

Barkhaa has the opportunity to take such form twice, but instead sticks to ‘aesthetically shot’ s** scenes that stop short of showing two flowers colliding. Lest we forget, we are reminded repeatedly that bargirls are humans too. Especially during the end-credit item song, whose lyrics translate to “Come come, I’m Naughty Number One, hotter than hottie!” …Indeed.

Despite its best intentions, it is a tedious exercise going through this film. Sara Loren is pretty, but her performance isn’t. The director and writer still probably think we’re stuck in the 60s and 70s. And such a tedious film at that. I mean ‘majboori’ and ‘izzat’ are so last century! Equally disappointing is the film’s music (that’s there for the sake of being there).

BARKHAA is Shadaab Mirza’s debut film as a director and his script is filled with numerous flaws. With an absolutely vague and directionless script, the film fails to hold your attention. It is far from entertaining. Shadaab fails to establish the connection between the flashback and the present day scenes convincingly. The length of the film is another deterrent. Overall, Shadaab fails to deliver, both, as a director as well as the screenplay writer (along with Lawrence John). On the whole, BARKHAA can be avoided as it offers nothing new.
