For the most part, Batti Gul Meter Chalu keeps you engaged because the story has enough to chew on. The film is crippled however by excess. Clocking in at nearly three hours, someone clearly left the meter chalu too long.Still Im going with three out of five. This is one of those mainstream movies that delivers its message coated with a thick layer of melodrama. And it works.

On the whole, Batti Gul Meter Chalu has an interesting second half but a poor first half. It can hope to do average business, that too, because around 65-70% of the investment in the film has already been recovered prior to release, from non-theatrical sources. In the cinemas, it will not have a long or eventful run.

This kind of film can turn too preachy for its own good, but Batti Gul Meter Chalu is careful not to get too much in lecture-mode. The rest of it made me smile, and gave me pause: how do you expect people to live without bijli in todays world? It is, as SK says thunderously, a fundamental right.

On the whole, BATTI GUL METER CHALU is an average, one-time watch entertainer that appeals only in parts. The film has lot of flaws and loose ends and Shahid Kapoors entertaining performance saves the day to an extent. At the box office, it will require a really strong word of mouth to attract footfalls.

With a tighter runtime and more focus on the crux of the story, this social drama had the potential to shine bright. The cinematography by Anshuman Mahaley manages to capture the beauty of Uttarakhands hills very well. The movie also has a parallel track of two characters named Vikas and Kalyan, narrating the story, but the metaphor doesnt quite click. BGMC loses power under the load of its heavy-duty screenplay.

Tatti Gul€¦.oops€¦I mean Batti Gul€¦(though thats a more befitting title of Shahid Kapoors latest release), is a contrived, forced attempt to showcase the problem of power cuts and obnoxious bills that Indians in some part of the country face. Sorry that will be misleading. Because the film doesnt even talk about the issue, it just superficially touches upon it in the first half because the makers are too busy showcasing a weird love triangle, the absurdity of which makes Kim Kardashian and Rakhi Sawant look like the epitome of sanity.

Shahid is in great form as a cheeky lawyer who can be petty one second and heroic the next. All the principal actors deliver on the acting front, but the screenplay is choppy and inconsistent.
While the film gives you an idea about the gravity of the power-supply problems in Indian small towns, it doesnt stoke the activist in you or make you enraged on behalf of the common man. You remain a mute spectator and that makes this film a lost opportunity.

Shahid forcefully delivers a high-voltage performance that come across as gimmicky with an anti-establishment monologue thrown in, talking about the trials and tribulations of the common man, that falls flat. The courtroom drama also snowballs into a revolution of sorts at a national level that is too superficial for a film like Batti Gul Meter Chalu. Director Shree Narayan Singh, who gave us Toilet-Ek Prem Katha, fails to deliver here. You won’t miss a thing if you give this movie a pass.
