I’m not saying it’s a great film, or that it’s even good. But the ‘bromance’ between Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron is very enjoyable, and Priyanka Chopra more than makes her presence felt in her first American film. Like junk food, “Baywatch” is hard to resist even though you know it has no nutritional value. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five. I’ll admit I had a good laugh. More than a few actually.

I desperately wanted Baywatch to be a laugh. Alas, even Johnson, to my mind one of the most charismatic action heroes of all time, can’t keep this shipwreck afloat. Efron, usually enjoyable, is dragged down by a painfully puerile script. To be fair, he does have a couple of vaguely amusing lines in the trailers, but, thanks to Mr Nihalani, they are nowhere to be heard in theatres. Similarly, Chopra doesn’t get to say her attitude-soaked “Easy, Britney” line – a quip I rather enjoyed in the trailer, aimed at a cross-dressing Efron – in our theatres. The scene, like many, has vanished. If you are have made up your mind about watching this film, don’t do it on the big screen in India. In fact, considering how insipid the cinematography is, you might as well watch this at home.

Baywatch, then, as a film, has no real thrills to offer its viewers unless you get those goosebumps you got once when you saw a young David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson show themselves up when Baywatch has just about finished drowning itself and left you gasping for breath. The only thing that allows you some breathing space, even as you feel drowned by the film, is the film’s duration, which, at 116 minutes, is the second best thing about Baywatch!

In fact, the only person with as much oomph as Anderson, evoked at the cost of much blood, sweat, tears and, not to forget, many trolls, in Baywatch is Chopra. You want a real redux? Thats a thought.

The ridiculous dumbness of Efrons character is hilarious. Johnson mocking the pretty boy is the funniest thing about this R-rated comedy, which spoofs the original series more often than not. Its all absurd and silly, which can be fun but things go downhill when the movie starts taking itself way too seriously as an investigative drama. Characters spout wisdom by uttering lines to the effect of, You dont Baywatch, you are Baywatch.Priyanka Chopra looks smokin hot in this two-hour-long behind the scenes footage, masquerading as a film.In her substantial but brief appearance the desi girl infuses that much-needed glamour to the proceedings as opposed to the babes in red, who are not a patch on Pamela Anderson.

Baywatch is a comedy which makes the bizarre decision to not feature known comedic actors in lead roles. It is written by two men whose biggest credits include Freddy vs Jason and Friday the 13th (comedies, but not intentionally). It boasts unpardonably terrible CGI, even worse green screen effects, and the maturity of a 12-year-old boy whose internet privileges have been revoked. It gives the impression of being stitched together almost as an afterthought, the sort of film in which scenes intended to be in the first act end up in the third and everyone smirks at each other thinking we wont notice.
