On the whole, Bhaiyya Ji is interesting in parts but it will not be able to do well at the box-office because at the end of the day, it turns out to be a routine revenge drama and one in which the casting is not proper.

Even though the plot of Bhaiyya Ji is simple, it looks stretched. In 2 hours and 15 minutes, the film hardly features any exciting twists. Although Manoj Bajpayee plays his role with utmost sincerity, he does not really fit the character.

A film with a one-line plot needed a lot more pizzazz, whistle-worthy dialogue, and a large-than-life, invincible protagonist. Karki makes a Rajinikanth kind of actioner (Bhaiyya Ji fights with a bidi in his mouth) but with a realistic soul, and falls between two boats.

Bhaiyya Ji is an attempt to bring the grammar of south mass to the Hindi heartland. It is an ironic role reversal because this mass cinema has its roots in the Hindi masala films of the 70s, namely Don, Deewar, and Coolie. And now as storytelling comes a full circle, Bollywood finds itself inspired by the style and sass of Tamil and Telugu films. But there are no marks for attempts in the cine world. Execution is what matters. And there, Bhaiyya Ji has miles to go. Maybe it can be a lesson for future filmmakers, for there is a lot right here too. But if people can improve on where it went wrong, Hindi cinema can truly own the desi action space again.

Is he a Robinhood? Is he an outlaw? Or just an ordinary family man who has been wronged? The best way to describe Bhaiyya Ji, both the hero and the title is that there’s no specific definition or description. There’s a lot of badassery on display even when the drama runs out of fuel. The captain of the ship tries his darndest, but forgets he’s trying to sail the ship on a deserted island.
