On a scale of Insufferable to Awesome, Bharat ranks closer to the lower end, somewhere besides Tubelight and Race 3. Theres a lot going on in this film, yet very little is particularly remarkable. Salman plays Salman once again, and if you enjoy that goofy shtick then good for you, but its fast getting old. Hes most interesting playing a senior citizen, sporting grey with pride.In the end Bharat is exhausting and pointless. It exists only to add to the legend of Salman Khan as the selfless provider, the man who has a heart as big as his biceps. In Bharat, Salman Khan plays Bhai.
Im going with two out of five.

Bharat also makes a promise to his father and spends the rest of the film fulfilling it. But Ali has the mammoth task of telling this ambitious, sprawling story while also keeping intact the Salman Khan mythology. Ali must cater to the legions of Bhai fans so Bharat must have swagger, he must have enough glamorous romantic songs, he must be able to vanquish any odds that come his way. In short, he must be from the beginning to the end resolutely heroic. Which takes away from the poignancy and emotion of the journey. I know nothing about Korean history but by the end of Ode To My Father, I was weeping like a baby. The film is a masterclass in melodrama. In comparison, Bharat is bloated and inconsistent.

On the whole, Bharat is below-average in merits but it will do above-average business because of the Eid advantage and the Salman Khan factor. At the box office, it will not at all be able to become a landmark film like some of Salman Khans and Ali Abbas Zafars earlier films. In other words, its business at the ticket windows will fall greatly short of the high expectations. Taking into account its recoveries from satellite, digital and audio rights, its overall business will, of course, exceed its high cost, making it a paying proposal in pure commercial terms. But thats just not enough when its a Salman Khan film. His fans need to feel elated but in this case, his fans will feel terribly let down.

This parallel unfurls in the first half with verve and strong dollops of emotion, and gives us both scope and sweep.Post interval, though, the film sags. From the tumultuous scenes of bloodshed of the Partition, and the sundering of Bharats family in Lahore, to their arrival in a Delhi refugee camp, in search of a future, Bharat is sure-footed. After the half-way point, it meanders.

The actor-director firm of Salman Khan and Ali Abbas Zafar has two smash hits in their kitty – Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai. Bharat, their third collaboration, is probably more ambitious than the first two outings in so much as the demands it makes on Salman the actor while drawing strength principally from Salman the star. In the end, it doesn’t matter who wins – the actor or the star – Bharat is a full-on crowd-pleaser for the massive fan base out there seeking recompense for the Tubelight and Race 3 reverses. But for the rest, Bharat is a ponderous trudge.

Also, the intention to inspire is a bit in your face. While emotional manipulation happens in every film, the fact that its evident here makes it a tad overbearing. The reverence is blatant. A little subtlety and crisp editing would have done wonders.Bharat is well-intentioned, entertaining and doesnt succumb to the trappings of commercial potboilers. The fact that it tries a bit too hard to prove that, is its problem.

Bharat is not a patriotic or a jingoistic film, it has all the elements required to make a full-fledged masala pot-boiler. With some age-old ideologies sprinkled with newness, Salman Khan’s Eidi will entertain the audience. Since it’s an Eid release, we did miss the flavour of the festival in Bharat. With supporting casts such as Sonali Kulkarni, Aasif Sheikh, and a few others, the film is definitely a family entertainer.

The best thing about this Ali Abbas Zafar directorial is that it is a typical Salman Khan entertainer that most of us have enjoyed over the years and yet it is different from all those films. The reason Ali Abbas Zafar succeeds time and again and delivers a Salman Khan blockbuster is that he gives his fans what they want without losing his own voice as a filmmaker. The movie is filled with humour, often funny and sometimes cringe-worthy but throughout its runtime, what impacts the audience most is the solid emotional connect. The story itself is such that it’ll instantly connect with everyone on a very humane level.

BHARAT is based on the 2014 Korean flick Ode To My Father (directed by Yoon Je-kyoon; written by Park Su-jin). The story has been Indianized very well and the important events of post-Independence India like the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, rise of unemployment, the 1983 Cricket World Cup final, era of liberalisation and globalisation, emerging trend of redevelopment etc are well inserted in the narrative. On the whole, BHARAT is a super-entertainer with emotions as its strong USP and Salman Khan like never before. The superb combination of Salman Khan, emotions and the release period [Eid] will ensure fireworks at the ticket windows. At the box office, it will fetch bumper profits for all concerned.
