Once a soldier, always a soldier. The war may die down and the wounds may heal, but the scars last forever. Ang Lee’s introspective film encompasses this brutal reality of a solider, who cannot leave the war behind him. The blood on his hands never allows him to be at peace, long after his duty is over. Clint Eastwood’s portrayal of the predicament of a decorated military hero in American Sniper was more hard-hitting. This ones effective in portions, but falls short of holding your undivided attention.

As for the satire on war for which the book was lauded, its been totally lost in translation. For a more trenchant rendering of the links between the realities of war and the hero-hungry American public, its worth checking out the vastly superior Hail the Conquering Hero (1944) or the more recent Flags of Our Fathers (2006). Neither exciting nor entertaining, Billy Lynns€¦ is recommended for Ang Lee completists only.

Billy Lynns Long Half-Time Walk is based on a book about American soldiers posted in Iraq in 2004, which was written in 2012. And yet, it couldnt be more timely. It captures in glorious, fulsome irony a culture celebrating soldiers as heroes, which sees in a single shot fired by an astonishingly young and stunned man a chance to make the country €œfeel good about America again€.
