Besides the director, due credit goes to writer Christina Hodson for setting the female-centric narrative tone without the need for a blatantly feminist angle. However, while the female characters are always front and centre, some beats feel misplaced now and then, and enough screentime isnt afforded to the entire gang. But, the well-choreographed action in collaboration with John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski is stunning to behold and easily amongst the best action sequences in comic book films till date. These elements combine to make Bird of Prey a funny, irreverent, extravagant and delightfully violent comic book film thats a blast to witness. Greenlight the sequel already!

The film has a difficult time overcoming its limitations which are sort of superimposed onto all the good moments. It is miles ahead of the lack of character focus found in its predecessor, but the films forceful nature doesnt let the audience simmer in the moods and textures of the characters in it. Every time there is an uplifting emotional moment between Quinn and her equally insane supporting characters were furnished with an unrestrained moment of either crassness or vehemence, or both together.

Birds of Prey gives Harley a new direction, but the need to soft-pedal her journey of self-discovery and locate her in a crowd of similarly put-down women means that she doesnt evolve too much beyond Suicide Squad. Harley has a bigger canvas to play with, more heads to bash in and more things to blow up, and Margot Robbies spunk and charisma ensure that Harleys nihilism retains an edge of humanity. Birds of Prey delivers a satisfying action spectacle led by women, but poignancy is the one element missing in the make-up of its addle-brained heroine. The seriousness that accompanied the Jokers latest outing is sacrificed for ultraviolet and ultraviolent mayhem laced with feminist-lite assertions about how girls can have fun too.
