When you decide on a title like Blank, you must make sure that your film is exactly the opposite. Otherwise you unwittingly end up providing ammunition for critics and viewers. You remember Paul Verhoevens deliciously awful film about Las Vegas strippers called Showgirls. New Yorker critic Anthony Lane had written in his review that the title is €œnot so much a noun as an imperative€. Here too Blank isnt merely an adjective, its an entire sensibility. Which, as you can imagine, makes for a pretty dull movie.

This action movie is helmed by first-time director Behzad Khambata and the inexperience shows in many portions where the filmmaker’s choices aren’t top-notch. The decision to play an emotional track called Himmat Karja just before and during a critical fight sequence kills the mood completely. And that is the way the film’s narrative plays out throughout. The movie has flashes of promise but just as many, if not more, moments of amateur execution. There’s also a special track called Ali Ali, featuring Akshay Kumar. Thankfully, it plays during the end credits and doesn’t really add to plentiful woes of the film.

Finally, the film which emphasizes its over-used thrust Islamic aatankwaad threatening the unity and integrity of akhand Bharat€”comes off as far too generic. A kohl-eyed Islamist (Khan) brainwashing young boys and turning them towards jihad? Done to death. A suicide bomber? Even more so.

Writer-director Behzad Khambata seems to have a healthy appetite for police procedurals and is aware of the basic construct required to make them tick. But in 2019, sticking to tropes can hardly trigger an exciting watch and the supposed turn in the climax seems more ridiculous than rational to be palatable. The films title possibly refers to the protagonists compromised mental state. Having endured this one, its a debilitating condition that you will share with him.

Overall, the film has an interesting premise and a unexpected twist at the end. Sunny Deols on-screen charisma and prowess with Karan Kapadias first time attempt will hold your attention, only if you can ignore the annoying background score. So, leave your expectations at the door and go for this film with the thought that youll get to see Sunny Deol be a badass like he was in the 90s.

Sunny Deol, a veteran at saving the nation, swings his giant fists and yells on command. Karan Kapadia is a blank canvas onto which little more than a dream of a Bollywood career can be projected. There is just about enough material here for a conventional yarn about Islamist terrorists with nefarious plans for India. The rest is the equivalent of firing blanks.

The film has got an interesting premise but falters in the execution. The treatment is way over the top and melodramatic. Summing up, given its premise, the film had the potential to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller, if only the writing and execution could have been better.
