Blind – which marks the return of SonamKapoorAhuja on the screen after a hiatus – has an interesting premise and is backed by several thrilling moments€¦ The uneven pace and faulty writing do act as speed breakers€¦ A crime drama thats backed by impressive performances [Sonam, PurabKohli and VinayPathak] and some thrills.

Shome Makhija has adapted the story and screenplay of the Korean original, but he has been unable to make an arresting drama as it looks like a script of convenience, which keeps irritating the audience. On the whole, Blind doesnt have the thrill or the excitement needed in a film of this kind. It will not find much appreciation.

Quite soon into the film, the identity of the serial killer is revealed. The suspense is meant to come from the cat-and-mouse game between the killer and Gia. But Kapoor is wholly ineffective, and except for one sequence in which the killer is chasing her down buses, subways and the riverfront where you can feel real danger, this thing is deadly dull.

On paper, the premise is solid and has all the elements essential for a compelling crime thriller. A lonely visually impaired character at the centre of a heinous crime, residing in a deserted sleepy town is good enough to create nerve-wracking tension and paranoia. Films like Don’t Breathe (2016) used this sort of scenario perfectly. Sadly, Sonams sluggish OTT debut is devoid of that bone-chilling nervous energy. Makhijas lethargic direction lacks urgency or fear, and the films incompetent lead cast only furthers the damage.

The film is produced by Sujoy Ghosh and at places, Blind does possess the seedy atmospherics of Badla, but director Shome Makhija, who has also penned the screenplay, doesnt feel the need to throw any twists in the story. Its all a battle between the angel and the devil, and a never-ending battle at that. Certain lines mouthed by Kohli will take you back to the days of Asur that were not too far behind, and a loyal canine refreshes the memories of Teri Meherbaniyan that was in 1985. That was the year when Anil Kapoor starred in Meri Jung. Why is it mentioned here? Maybe because completing this film becomes a battle after a point.

Will she be able to find the truth amid the darkness? Well, she does, but the small elements give it a slasher film feel rather than that of a sophisticated cutting-edge thriller. Consequently, the climax does not fully deliver the expected suspenseful moments. In a nutshell, the film Blind fails to provide the anticipated suspense.

If you are a Sonam Kapoor fan, then you must give her attempt to try something fresh a chance. She has acted honestly in the film, and one might feel her pain in the movie. Overall, if you love crime dramas with psychological elements, then you can give it a watch, but don’t keep your hopes too high. This could have been a better watch if more intense shades were added to the movie; however, it won’t feel like a waste of time.

The script is too predictable and too shallow. It will not keep you guessing at all. The jump scares don’t scare you either. The characters seem too underdeveloped. Vinay Pathak’s character Prithvi Khanna is the typical police inspector with an intent to provide some comic relief but it doesn’t fit right despite the actor doing a good job. By the end, Blind seems dragged. Trimming the movie would not have hurt at all.

Blind isnt the spiffiest crime thriller. It has its own flaws. Its gory, gloomy and grim. But you can give it a chance for Elsa, the most gorgeous brown Labrador. She brings about the sweetest respite in this cold tale of human spirit and vengeance. If you do have some free time after exploring Threads, have missed watching Sonam or not tired of crime thrillers yet, then go for Blind.
