Diya Annapurna Ghoshs direction is fair. While she has extracted good work from out of the actors, she seems to have sacrificed the intrigue value of the plot. On the whole, Bob Biswas remains an average fare because it does not involve the viewers as much as is should.

Sujoy is one of Hindi cinemas leading directors of thrillers. Its hard to gauge Diyas ability to follow in her fathers footsteps because this film is so badly hobbled by the script. The last straw is a diary which contains the details of murders and must be retrieved at all costs. Which took me back to the climax of Don in 1978 in which a similar diary was being tossed between the good guys and the bad guys. I think its time criminals upgraded to a digital record of their crimes.

In keeping with the Vidya Balan starrer, Bob Biswas, too, is set in Kolkata. Though at a couple of places this movie tends to lag, for most part it keeps you invested in the narrative. As a debutante, Diya has done a good enough job directing this killer of a story.Even though there are a couple of loopholes and Bob Biswas is not as brilliant as Kahaani, its nonetheless an interesting thriller you must watch.

A man with a past he cannot remember. A film with a past we cannot forget. Together, they should have instantly caught our imagination. In the first quarter, they almost do. And then, a degree of monotony sets in and engulfs the film. Neither Bob Biswas the thriller written by Sujoy Ghosh nor Bob Biswas the killer fleshed out by Abhishek Bachchan can hold a candle to their respective forerunners.

As the focal point of the film, Abhishek Bachchan has worked hard on his body for this role, gained weight for it, and altered his posture. He also makes a glaringly inconsistent effort to adopt a Bengali accent. That slip-up is marginal though compared with the fact that unlike Saswata Chatterjee in Kahaani, Abhishek never quite gets under Bobs skin. While he must take some responsibility for that, the truth is that the script itself unlike Kahaanis script never quite gets under Bobs skin. Bob Biswas has its moments, but in totality struggles to lift off.

Overall, the attempt at a creating interest and suspense around the life of a contract killer has some moments. Bachchan continues to prove that he can get away from wanting to be a hero to his advantage. Sujoy Ghoshs screenplay has room for a couple of wonderfully quirky characters. And whats not to love about atmospheric Kolkata. But I wanted to be surprised more.

On the whole, BOB BISWAS is an interesting thriller and rests on a fine script by Sujoy Ghosh, able direction by Diya Annapurna Ghosh and the excellent performance of Abhishek A Bachchan.

Bob Biswas starts out as an exploration into an oddity. But a directionless deconstructing into his morality, obviousness of its storytelling, the clumsy connecting of dots as well as the utter mess the characters and their fates descend into for the sake of a silly payoff can be summarised more woeful than whimsy.
