BOURNE LEGACY  MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

The fundamental problem with The Bourne Legacy is that it contains too much talking and very little action. Its a far cry from the earlier Bourne films, particularly Supremacy and Ultimatum, both directed by Paul Greengrass whose frenetic shaky-camera shooting style and breathless direction turned those films into smart, realistic action-thrillers.Gilroy cleverly connects this story to the existing Bourne universe, although we never see Jason Bourne in Legacy, However the film suffers considerably on account of its lethargic pace, and the only time you feel like youre watching a true-blue Bourne film is during that thrilling climatic chase scene through the streets of Manila.Im going with two out of five for The Bourne Legacy. After three terrific Bourne films, this is one sequel we didnt need.

Taking off from where Bourne Ultimatum ended, this film deals with agencies and deadly operations: Operation Blackbriar, Operation Outcome, Operation Treadstone and Operation Blackbriar. However, it is only when he fights the Alaskan wolves does he do what it takes to be a part of the Bourne brigade. And that’s when you know you can’t really blame Jeremy Renner for the slow pace (understandably the plot building screen time) in the first half.Of course, this Bourne film gives you relentless action primarily during the last motorcycle scene. The first time you are on the edge of the seat is during the shootout-at-the-lab scene. The final kick — by Rachel Weisz in a we-wish-it-never-ended-bike-chase – makes up for all that legacy stuff we have been waiting for.

For the first hour or so, The Bourne Legacy meanders aimlessly. There is an information overload that could throw even the most clued-in viewer off balance. Yet, it would be foolish to judge and value The Bourne Legacy for what it does not have. For what exists and what is there, it is an excellent film. And it must be said of Jeremy Renner that he is a marvellously alpha-male presence, ruggedly good-looking on the lines of Daniel Craig .Do we still hear cries for Matt Damon?

The action sequences are recognisable and the Aaron Cross makes for a good character but the film falls short in terms of depth and intensity. A lot of information that was essential in the first three films is recapped in The Legacy which makes for a lot of talking making the film conversation-heavy and tedious. The final chase sequence of the film, shot in Manila, is fast and violent but goes on forever and you find yourself drifting off. The film is so obviously open-ended that they might as well have written in bold letters €œthere will be a sequel€ before roll credits. The Bourne Legacy is a decent enough film on its own but not exactly a gem in the Bourne series. Fans should give it a try and action lovers should definitely watch it.

All in all, if you were to show me Bourne Legacy as a stand-alone movie with a different title and no connection with the prior Bourne movies, Id say its a pretty entertaining film. Sure, it has its dull moments but its dialogue, pacing and sequences are way above many of the others in its genre. Unfortunately, I felt like I was constantly reminded of the genius that the preceding three films left behind. Though we must remember, that theres no shame in being number four in a series of four films when the other three are the Bourne Trilogy. I recommend you watch it if youre after a whole new cinematic journey and not just a sequel.Verdict: Whether you like it or not, Bourne is reborn.

Less a thrilling franchise reboot than a solid salvage mission, €œThe Bourne Legacy€ is the fourth installment in a series that until now starred Matt Damon as the eponymous spy who, with his near-uncanny wiles, smarts and strength, ran circles around American intelligence agencies and box office rivals both. Through all three movies Jason Bourne was still trying to find the answers. Now with Bourne gone, Mr. Gilroy needs to find other questions worth asking.
