The film, directed by Sharon Maguire, is about a pregnant Bridget Jones and two absurdly attractive suitors fighting over paternity, and proves to be a trite confection of a 90s vintage. Yet there is something oddly comforting about a comedy this basic, one that resorts to all the tropes shamelessly, giving itself over even to a last-minute climactic run. All in the name of drama weve already seen.

First off, it’s pretty clear that this, the third film in the series is quite enjoyable thanks to the inherent humour almost throughout the film. Jones’s dilemma is about whether she should go with her old flame, someone familiar who knows her all too well and is almost the complete opposite of her in terms of personality, or the loaded, good looker who has tons of women swooning over him. And then of course, she knows that the guy, who is not the father of her baby, is going to be heartbroken. How does she tread lightly on this sensitive subject? Even though a lengthy two hours, the narrative skips along rather nicely. Fans of the series are sure to like it.

If youre in the market for snazzy British humor and an easygoing story that you can maybe relate to in some way this film is for you. Theres also a ton of slapstick humor courtesy of Zelwegger and her characters shenanigans. In a year filled with depressing superhero movies and even duller action thrillers its nice to get a shiny happy movie in Bridget Jones’s Baby that perpetuates some hope and celebration for a change. It reminds you that Hollywood forgot to make comedies like this, and we forgot that we need them from time to time.
