There are moments in the film, especially in the first hour that feel flat and mechanical almost as though the makers were simply putting together a serviceable placeholder, which is what Captain Marvel is its the last stand-alone film before Avengers: Endgame, which will bring the Thanos storyline to a close. But hang in there. Because much like the superhero herself, once Captain Marvel finds its footing, the film is rousing and entertaining. The end credit sequence made me whoop with delight and clap.

There are a few narrative surprises in the script, despite the superhero moments being well intact. But, they come along with a meandering pace that severely drags the film down to a lull during the first act, and somewhere around the middle too. Yes, the plot sets out to establish Carol Danvers as a bonafide bad-ass and thoroughly succeeds in the end. Its about time Captain Marvel showed up, and the Avengers are a much stronger team with Danvers on their side. This also succeeds in getting you even more excited for Avengers: Endgame (as if that was needed). By now, MCU fans know the drill: stick around for the end credits, and you will not be disappointed. Unfortunately, the route it takes encounters some speed bumps, courtesy of the usual superhero origin issues that have troubled the genre.

Theres a lot to enjoy in Captain Marvel, though – especially since the pre-established goodwill of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will likely be forgiving to its many flaws – but it cant help but feel stunningly insignificant in the larger scheme of things. Its like a feature length trailer for the character all set-up with little payoff and reignites repressed memories of Iron Man 2.Like that film, the primary agenda here seems to be setting up an Avengers movie; this time its Endgame.

You need a little patience for Captain Marvel. The first half is rather rushed, grand words strewn around along with characters and too much information thrown at you in minutes. Apart from Larson’s witty and winsome dialogues and hilarious deadpan comebacks, it’s the fun banter and chemistry between Jackson and Larson that keeps it afloat.By the second half, the writers have gathered control over the film. You finally can feel invested in Captain Marvel as a character and Larson establishes the superhero in the league of the Avengers.

Marvel Cinematic Universe finally has a woman superhero, and she arrives on the scene kicking some real ass. While Brie Larson would seem an unlikely choice to play her €” known best for her Oscar-winning performance as a mother held captive in Room €” she brings to the role a welcome mix of innocence and resolve, vulnerability and determination. Larson also shares a lovely chemistry with Jackson, playing a young Agent Fury with some digital help. This is the longest role for Fury in all the Avengers films so far, and Captain Marvel uses him well to both give him and Captain Marvel an engaging origin story.

the film lacks the coherence of other Marvel films. None of the secondary characters get enough space, and it wouldnt be audacious to say that it might have happened because the makers were in a hurry to introduce Captain Marvel before Avengers: Endgame.Captain Marvel is an enjoyable and robust entrant in MCU. Although it’s a long way for Carol Danvers to prove herself as the strongest superhero, she has definitely set her foot right.

And thats why it is a little heartbreaking that Captain Marvel, the 21st film in the MCU and the first to focus solely on a female superhero, might not garner the somewhat unanimous cheer as its predecessor origin story. The film, a long overdue look at MCUs most powerful superhero and that too played by a woman, opens fittingly on Womens Day. But if youre thinking it will do for female empowerment what Black Panther did for black representation, then you might be a tad bit disappointed.

When Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is in full power, you would feel that all this while you have been served legendary stories about heroes in action. Thing is that Captain Marvel makes all other superheroes look like putty. All in all, Captain Marvel is an enjoyable but flawed movie. However, it also finally gives us one of the best MCU characters.
