Bold. Refreshingly different. Progressive cinema€¦ #CKA enlightens and entertains€¦ Pushes the envelope, defies the stereotype and drives home a pertinent message€¦ WATCH IT! After #KaiPoChe and #RockOn, director #AbhishekKapoor gets it right yet again with #ChandigarhKareAashiqui€¦ He handles the subject on hand with utmost sensitivity€¦ There are minor hiccups [second half], but the drama, conflict and culmination deserve brownie points. AyushmannKhurrana is known for choosing out of the box themes and #ChandigarhKareAashiqui mirrors his versatility yet again€¦ Kudos for green-lighting this one, stepping out of the comfort zone and bringing to fore an issue not many actors wouldve had the courage to accept.

The film falls into the emerging sub-genre of Hindi films that aim to make viewers reconsider their perspectives on tricky topics such as sexual orientation and gender. The messaging is made palatable by the packaging. Its the Trojan horse maneuver disguising a subversive idea with comforting, commercial tropes. In this film, problems are resolved a tad too easily. Even long-simmering resentments are fixed by convenient plot twists. The writing is clumsy and the plot tries to do too much. But for all its flaws, Im glad that Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui exists.

The comedy and light moments are quite enjoyable at several places. However, the crux of the story is so insensitively handled that the plus points of the drama pale into insignificance in comparison.On the whole, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a film with very limited class appeal. Other than that, it will face rejection among the masses and family audiences. In other words, its business only from select multiplexes of the big cities will be fair.

Abhishek Kapoors film, which is about how love is love, hello gender fluidity, differences be damned, is on to something. Even in 2021, Bollywood prefers playing safe and keeping all tricky subjects at bay. On that score, getting in a trans person as romantic plot point is an act of courage. But Kapoor is also careful, one might say a little too careful, and wraps everything up in jokey stereotypy. But if you are so worried about potentially alienating your viewers, you are also likely to dilute the heft of your subject. So you go ahead and insert words like chakka (ugh) so that you can get your hero to push back against it and feel very noble. But to use paagalon ka doctor for psychiatrists? Really

Love stories are love stories after all. Mostly, boy-meets-girl, some romance, mush-gush, conflict, makeup or breakup, and end of the story. Well here, boy does meet girl, too, but she has a past (not the clich© affair, marriage, child out of wedlock or criminal history), that becomes hard for Manu, with all his machismo, to bear. Without giving away much (Story Idea credited to Simran Sahni), lets say that Maanvi has courageously battled all odds, and transformed into a new person, someone she has always pined to be. While she feels liberated and is proud of her new identity, and one thats true to her real self, will society and her family embrace her choice and accept her for what they call, not normal in their very normal world.

Barring a gimmicky climax and a conveniently rushed conclusion, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, is like a breath of fresh air, easily Bollywood’s most progressive, evolved, and informative mainstream movie on the LGBTQ+ community sans any preachiness whatsoever, with a vastly improved Vaani Kapoor, and reliable as ever Ayushmann Khurrana heading the show. I’m going with 3.5 out of 5 stars

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui embraces the right line of thinking – full marks to the writers and the director on that score – and runs with it for a while and then lets it slip out of its grasp. By the time it gets to the finishing line, it is back to square one. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui could have been a well-targeted blow to regressive shibboleths. All it manages to muster is a feeble jab. A massive missed opportunity.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’s radical romance takes some significant baby steps but is, ultimately, too simplistic in driving its change-is-just-a-heartfelt-speech-away naivet©. For all its sympathy towards the transgender community, it’s really about a guy’s acceptance of his girlfriend’s sexual identity and never about her struggle in one. While I don’t fully share Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’s optimism and doubt someone as obnoxious could develop sense overnight, it’s good to see Khurrana doesn’t downplay the toxicity.

What you get is an emotional yet cheerful two-hour film that somehow manages to hold on to something important, through all of its good-natured fluff. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a film I find myself rooting for against all odds. Commercial success apart, hopefully it can help push the needle of empathy a notch or two.
