CHAPPIE ENGLISH MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

Blomkamp borrows ideas and themes liberally – from his own previous films, from ‘Robocop’, ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Westworld’, and also from Philip K Dick novels – but ‘Chappie’ fails to rise above the clich©s of its genre. It’s loud, silly, and never offers much more than a few moments of irreverent humor, and the occasional thrilling set piece. The big problem is that Chappie’s transformation from impressionable sweet-natured child to lethal killing machine isn’t emotionally satisfying. And Blomkamp doesn’t give us any character that’s truly worth rooting for. I’m going with two out of five for ‘Chappie’. It’s derivative and not particularly fun. Hardly the best way to spend two hours on a lazy weekend.

There’s the surreal touch – Blomkamp using a real-life cyberpunk rap-rave group Die Antwoord, comprising Ninja and Yolandi, whose colourful attire match their cuss words. Chappie’s innocence is strangely endearing. Patel is a natural as the nerd scientist. As a movie, Chappie is slightly bonkers (Jackman in cargo shorts, humans babying a robot, Copley’s voice intonations for his character, etc), but delightfully so.

Voiced by a Blomkamp favourite, Sharlto Copley, Chappie is absolutely charming and absolutely tragic.Given that everyone seems to have a largely free run of a large weapons manufacturing companys R&D unit, there is at least one scientific revelation from all the comings and goings: sometime in the future, one could download ones consciousness onto a pen drive for eternity.

Chappie has a lot of soul as a film. But the inconsistencies in the plot ensure that you catch only glimpses of what the movie could have been. The end result is far from perfect and is reduced to drivel with the silly dialogues. But it is Chappie the robot with artificial intelligence who drives the movie even during the bleakest moments. For him alone, the movie deserves a watch.
