CHASING MAVERICKS MOVIE REVIEW
Bursting with clich©s at every corner, this film contains some of the phoniest dialogue delivered by any cast, particularly Gerard Butler, whose character Frosty is required to solemnly dispense cheesy life-lessons, even as Jay tries to stay focused despite his alcoholic mother, his indecisive girlfriend, and the bullies at school. The story of the real Jay Moriarity, who died tragically in a diving accident at 22, is a moving one, but he deserved a better tribute than this shallow film that is riveting only in its final moments during which Jay finally faces those intimidating but breathtaking waves.Im going with two out of five for Chasing Mavericks. If you must, watch it for the stunning open-water photography.

As a film on the life of a surfer, who mastered the adrenalin-driven sport at 16, Chasing Mavericks lacks the emotional pressure that is ideally expected in an athlete-centric film. The dialogues too could have been more effective to compliment the heart-rending story. However, in spite of the drawbacks, the film works owing to its brilliant cinematography and heart-warming performances.Gerard Butler plays his role well. He looks the part and acts well as the man who is unable to express his true feelings. Unkempt and reserved, he is the prisoner of his own past. Jonny Weston is likeable as Jay Moriarity but lacks charisma. If you love the sea and love chasing your dreams, Chasing Mavericks is for you.

Had this film been made in the 1980s, it would have been a cult film. It has all the tropes. The story isn’t very multi-layered and the dramatic strength peters out often. Chasing Mavericks does everything by the book but sometimes that’s not such a bad thing. It espouses what good surf films do, that catching a wave is more of a lifestyle than a sport. Yes, the film doesn’t not deliver thrills by the minute but it is not without its nostalgia-inducing charms and overall escapist credentials.Oh, and its a true story too, if that matters to you.
