Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao constitute one of Hindi cinemas most potent artistic collaborations. Their films Shahid, for which Rajkummar won a National Award, City Lights, Aligarh, Omerta are blistering, probing portraits of the state of our world. In Chhalaang, Hansal and Rajkummar attempt something more mainstream. They tell the uplifting story of a PT teacher in small-town Haryana, who finds his purpose in life through coaching the weakest kids in the school into a winning team. I suspect this conventional narrative went against their DNA. Chhalaang isnt tear-your-hair-out awful. Its just ordinary.

On the whole, director Hansal Mehta gets the setting quite right with a lot of detailing. But with more conviction in execution and writing, this one could’ve hit it out of the park.

Mehta, whose terrific web series Scam 1992 is still making waves, displays a knack of old-fashioned story-telling in this one, which reminds you of Dangal in some of its elements: patriarchal Haryana, feisty young women, and the sports arena becoming a testing ground. Rao makes a gentle enabler of his team, with full encouragement from Neelima madam: a young girl (Garima Kaur) leads her team, consisting radically of both boys and girls, out of trouble. Girls for the win, yay.

They should be thankful to the writers–Aseem Arora, Luv Ranjan and Zeeshan Quadari€”who have used typical Bollywood tropes and have also gone overboard at some crucial junctures, but maintained high entertainment quotient throughout the runtime of 140-minutes. You may not take to the racing track as soon as the film ends but you will definitely applaud the kids at the helm of affairs with a lot of empathy and a big smile on your face.
After Scam 1992, another gift from Hansal Mehta.

Chhalaang, on the face of it, hits the right buttons, gender parity included, but it all seems more manufactured than organic when a man like Montu is handed a long rope and held up as a paragon of purposeful self-assertion.Chhalaang, unable to fend off its contradictions, gets all tangled up in its own mixed messages. As a result, the promised leap never materialises.

In this formulaic underdog tale, a doltish physical education teacher of a small town school in Haryana challenges his more qualified rival and demotion causer to a competition and prove his worth in everyone’s eyes. It’s the age-old hare-tortoise brand of clash where the unassuming long shot bests the overconfident hot favourite.

On the whole, CHHALAANG is a simple, relatable and a well-made entertainer that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. The performances, writing and well-edited scenes are like an icing on the cake. Recommended!
