The filmmakers deserve credit for never seeking our pity. They have too much respect for the women whove survived these horrible attacks that they dont manipulate us into shedding tears. If youre choked its because the reality of what it depicts is frequently overwhelming.Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for Chhapaak. Its strength is in its quietude. It goes about its business with minimal fuss. The film is both moving and important. And its leading lady is in very fine form.

Some stories should be told. Some issues must be addressed… Gut-wrenching, yet empowering… Aces: Sensitive writing. Skilled direction. Masterful performances… Take a bow, #Deepika and #MeghnaGulzar.

Meghna stages the attack with an unflinching gaze. Its devastating to watch the horror unfold so casually in a crowded market place. The bystanders gaze as a womans face melts. The first time we see it, the rousing title song written by Gulzar saab and sung by Arijit Singh plays. In scenes like this, the film rises to its full power. But there are also stretches in which disconnected events are strung together to make a larger point and Chhapaak hovers dangerously close to becoming a public service announcement. The messaging becomes bigger than the movie, which reduces the impact. There is enough to admire in Chhapaak. But I wish the film had taken the leaps that its protagonist did.

On the whole, Chhapaak is a well-made film, has a good message and has noble intentions but it doesnt make the desired connect with the audience. Also, it is a class-appealing film. It will, therefore, do well mainly in the high-end multiplexes of the big cities. While that would be enough for the producers to recover their costs and make a bit of a profit, a long run and great business dont look like a possibility. If the film is granted tax-exemption, the business would increase markedly. In fact, the film deserves tax-exemption.

Chhapaak has several parts that are delicately crafted. But the aggregation of the elements that constitute film does not somehow yield something greater than the sum of the parts. Nonetheless the parts that work do make Chhapaak essential viewing. Watch it not just for Deepika Padukone but also for what it has to say about a social scourge that refuses to go away.

It is that inspiring story that Meghna recreates, with some embellishments, of course, through Deepika Padukones Malti. If the star had played it like a vanity project, there would have been no film. But Chhapaak scores because she comes through with a solid, realised performance. It is not just putting the focus on the ravaged-skin-with a missing ear-and-nostril, but reflecting a mix of pain, anger, resignation, and finally, arriving at some kind of resolution.

Chhapaak is not a film that lets you go easy, just as one begins to settle in to think Malti has managed to get better of her perpetrator, it jolts you with a few grim, uncomfortable reminders. Chhaapak is a sensitive film with a delicate, yet powerful, handling of a heinous crime against women, and an important story that needs to be heard.

The blend Massey achieves is what Chhapaak needed as a whole. Without that, what we are left with are good intentions, a heart in the right place, a major star taking a huge risk with an unorthodox role and a bunch of pluses that somehow do not come together to deliver an immersive experience.

Though you feel that the film is marching towards a happy ending, no you will have a jaw-dropping moment in the climax. This film shouldn’t have a happy ending because acid attacks continue in this country and the fight wouldn’t stop until they don’t. Verdict: Watch it for the beautiful and gut-wrenching combination of Deepika and Meghna

On the whole, CHHAPAAK is a brave attempt at highlighting an issue and the crime that exists in our society. At the box office, it will have a difficult journey since it is not a commercial entertainer. Its business will be restricted to a tiny section of the multiplex frequenting audience.

All said and done, Chhapaak makes a bold statement exposing the lenient punishment for the heinous crime of acid-attack. It manages to display the pain but defocuses attention through the journey of recovery. It stretches the disturbance!
