CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 REVIEW

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: Masand’s Verdict (CNN IBN )

The animation is inventive and original, and some set-pieces are particularly funny, including one in which our band of heroes are chased around by a Double Bacon Cheespider. The message of anti-corporatism may be lost on the little ones, at whom this movie is clearly targeted. For anyone older, it’s a test of how many puns you’re willing to endure before you snap. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2. It’s got its moments, but I’d say wait for this one to come to DVD.

While its predecessor had more emotional impact, this second helping of Cloudy… is more adventurous and fun, while losing precious little of the overall charm of the characters and location. While kids will enjoy the jokes, there are sight gags galore to give adults a good guffaw or three. Generously laden with a buffet of food puns and savoury set locations, this is a film filled with gorgeous, vivid animation and no-holds-barred creativity. With plenty of ‘tasty’ surprises, the umpteen food references make it as much a gustatory delight as it is uplifting. Note: You may not like this film if you don’t like animation.

Though the film is based on an interesting concept of “foodimals”, the storyline with its twist and turns is devoid of intelligence and emotion. The scheme of events is very familiar and there is hardly any incident that can be quoted as the most original. The narration meanders from a clever sophisticatedly created sci-fi setting to a frivolously inconsequential Jurassic Park caricature which further converges into an exciting “Avatar” style nature versus machines battle. Overall, with a generic villain and robot henchmen and world domination goals, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is a children-centric film that lacks the punch.

The never-ending turn of events is eventually as tiresome as a junk food binge, but the colours, shapes and inventive fruits and vegetables are truly ravishing, and some of them stake their claim to Minion-level cuteness.
