Be forewarned. COOLIE NO. 1 is strictly for those who relish crazy entertainers. Those with an appetite for movies that defy logic, motive and intellect. The funda is crystal clear: Entertain. Make you laugh. To transport you to a different world. The trailers had prepared us about what to expect and COOLIE NO. 1 lives up to those expectations.On the whole, COOLIE NO. 1 is a typical David Dhawan entertainer €” crazy, outrageous and over the top €” but funny and entertaining. Sit back and enjoy this ride!

On the whole, Coolie No. 1 is a major disappointment. It is nothing compared to the 1995 film of the same name. Had it been released in the cinemas during normal times, it wouldve flopped after a fair start.

As it turned out, the opening credits were the most benign part of this train-wreck. The rest of it is even more harebrained, distasteful and unfunny. The earlier Coolie No 1 had a cheery lunacy and a degree of innocence that allowed the ridiculous plot to play out as an extended joke. Govindas effortless clowning helped viewers to ignore the more problematic parts of the film. But in 2020, the narrative is dated and offensive on so many levels.

Varun Dhawans Coolie No 1 frankly doesnt match up to what Govinda gave us in the 1995 version because it is almost impossible to fill into the latters shoes when it comes to his comic timing. If you loved Govindas Coolie No 1, this one will definitely not appeal to you because theres not much happening here that you did not already witness earlier. We’re going with 3 stars out of 5 for Coolie No 1.

Coolie No 1 does not take into account that the world has changed since the David Dhawan-Govinda combo churned out hit after hit with their mad capers. The formula that yielded dividends all those years ago no longer does.At one point in the film, Johnny Lever, playing Inspector Godbole (the role Tiku Talsania essayed in the original but with a different name and persona), says: “Main paagal ho jaaoonga (I’ll go mad)”. Exactly our point. Coolie No 1 is primed to drive the audience crazy and certainly not in a good way.

Inspired by Farhad Samjis repeatedly used line in the film €œHeaven on the dock man€, I came up with my version: €œHell on the dock man, if original was cheese this is chalk man!€

But with the material as thin as ever, this version seems even emptier: it goes in one ear, and vaporises before it can emerge from the other. In 1995, and in the absence of more pressing entertainment options, such candyfloss might have passed two hours mindlessly enough. In 2020, this means it will almost certainly be the streaming premiere most likely to go unfinished this season and competition for that sorry distinction has been fierce.

Dhawans films such as Aankhen, Shola Aur Shabnam, Coolie No 1, Judwaa, Hero No 1, were mostly those middle class poor guy-rich girl type of stories that made us notice the simplicity of the idea and their fun execution. Unfortunately, nothing similar can be said about Dhawans latest€”Coolie No 1 remake€”featuring his son Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan. Its tiring and irritating to see Dhawan senior losing his touch and presenting a half-baked product that has nothing to call its own, other than a couple of unremarkable oneliners and surprisingly tacky makeup.

The first Coolie No. 1 was written by Kader Khan, now deceased, and steered by the still-extant and evergreen Govinda. David Dhawan seems to believe that what Govinda did and only Govinda could do can be replicated by his son. This fatherly indulgence works very poorly for Varun Dhawan, who never quite comes into his own in a production aimed at resurrecting the ghosts of the past and recycling 1990s chartbusters and jokes.
