DALLAS BUYERS CLUB MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:3/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

The films best moments are the ones between Woodroof and Rayon, who go from antagonistic business partners to a pair of considerate co-workers committed to a noble cause. Woodroofs own transformation from a self-absorbed hateful redneck to a determined man of the people is the heart of this film, and its nicely unsentimental. Directed without much fuss by Jean-Marc Vall©e, this is a poignant yet inspiring film that unfolds like your standard biopic. Yet its riveting each time McConaughey is on screen. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for Dallas Buyers Club.

This is a stirring, touching film but — unlike say its fellow Oscar nominee, the well-crafted 12 Years A Slave — it stays impressively away from overt manipulation. Dallas Buyers Club is a film about smarts. It’s also a film about swagger. Matthew McConaughey drains himself out to play Woodroof, losing a couple of dozen kilos of weight, but despite his impoverished form, wears his hat high and keeps his hubris impossibly alive.

McConaugheys performance powers Dallas Buyers Club like a gale force. The film, directed by Canadian director Jean-Marc Vall©e, is a straight-forward narrative of resilience and beating the odds. But McConaughey, 45 pounds lighter, is at once, charming, obnoxious, wicked and vulnerable. The actors make the film. Both performances are Oscar nominated and its very likely that they are going to win. Im going with four stars.

Almost everything is just perfect in Dallas Buyers Club. A superb script by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack and touchingly sensitive direction by Jean-Marc Vallee, not to mention he never shifts focus from his subject. Matthew McConaughey’s portrayal of a guy suffering from aids couldn’t have been done better. It’s the intensity and the seriousness he puts in, see it to believe it! The least to say he deserves all the praise for this one. He is just terrific! Dallas Buyers Club is definitely worth watching, it’s a powerful film!

The film reveals the true story of an AIDS patients battle with the very medical establishment that is supposed to help him. He stands by his cause to the death, and to tell such a story and make the audience understand the point behind it is not an easy thing. But screenwriter Craig Borten has definitely achieved that feat with this film. What makes ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ truly brilliant is that it becomes a roaring crowd-pleaser even while dealing with a slow and morbid topic like death due to disease.Although the film is still one of the dark horses next to the other big names in the Oscar race, this is one film you will not want to miss, sheer brilliance all the way.

The film skillfully avoids the cheesy or preachy drama route and does a great job of establishing some dignity into a formerly despicable character. Leto plays Woodroofs business partner, a fellow AIDS patient and a psychologically disturbed transgender male. His character is the backbone of the film. Its a moving drama, and probably the most sincere film of 2013 and its good of PVR to release the film in India.

Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vall©e directs with finesse and subtlety, staying true to the subject and never letting style overwhelm the subject matter. But what really elevates the film is the intensity of McConaugheys performance. Looking skeletal and broken, his eyes glitter with a steely sense of desperate determination.

This is true story of one man. He was diagnosed with HIV and then AIDS. Its about him and millions like him. This film isnt about s**al orientation or identification. Its about our basic human right and need to survive. Ron Woodruff did what he had to in order to survive. In his struggle, we can identify ourselves. Everyone should watch this film as it has weight and value
