‘Darkest Hour’ moves with a passionate momentum fueled by director Joe Wright’s dramatic vision as seen in the sweeping top-angle shots and backed by a stirring score. But while cinematic liberties are expected in the screenplay and even welcome in such historic retellings, there’s often the temptation to go over-the-top. The film falters in these parts, serving to blatantly provoke a response from the audience. This is particularly experienced during a scene on the subway with Churchill and the British people that takes you out of the movie and drags on longer than needed. ‘Darkest Hour’ is pretentiously flawed in its obvious award-baiting, but well produced and rousing enough thanks to Gary Oldman in one of his most impressive performances

But its easy to be swept away by the grandiloquence, and like many period films this is a crowd pleasing bit of cinema with just enough drama to find yourselves manipulated and entertained. Its important, however, to not expect a truly authentic portrayal of Churchill because his morbidly racist persona is sanitized and turned into a war hero. Remember, hes the same guy who said Indians are beastly people with a beastly religion, and he also bragged about shooting Sudanese savages in their heads. Perhaps well see that side of Churchill in cinemas one day, and Oldman, with his flair for playing lovable assholes will be even more perfect for the part.

There is only one way of recognising that it is Gary Oldman who is playing Churchill in director Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour. It’s a certain twang in his voice when he pronounces words with the letter ‘N’ in it. Otherwise, for the entirety of the 2-hour-5-minute film, it’s Oldman and his masterpiece of a performance that takes the movie to a whole new level, worthy of the star’s Golden Globe win for Best Actor.

Director Jake Kasdan crams the narrative with one outlandish crisis after another. There are hair-raising encounters with beasties including a pack of rampaging hippos. Throughout, the far-fetched goings-on compel us to suspend disbelief. An intermittently amusing fantasy €¦Welcome to the Jungle will appeal primarily to adolescent viewers.
