DARR AT THE MALL MOVIE REVIEW

DARR @ THE MALL does boast of some scary moments, but they are few and far between. In fact, the director uses every possible trick in the book to scare the viewer; some work, some don’t. Also, though the length of the film has been maintained to hold the viewer’s interest, the film tends to get stretched at places. On the whole, DARR @ THE MALL is too ordinary a fare to leave an impact.

‘Darr @ The Mall’ comes as a huge disappointment. While one doesn’t expect much of a novelty in terms of story when it comes to horror, cliched execution cannot be forgiven. For starters, the film offers standard scary occurrences like doors opening by themselves, drawers banging and children crying used as background score. None of these ‘tried-and-tested’ methods manage to shock you, barring a chilling ice skating scene. Also, the plot is extremely predictable. The film might work for those who get frightened easily. For fans of the genre, watch Ragini MMS instead, if you still haven’t.

Confession: I am very scared of horror films. I was all set to see this one from under my chair, or making a lattice with my fingers and peering through. And Darr @ the Mall did give me a couple of jumpy moments. But at no point did I feel like diving below, or closing my eyes. In fact, by the second half, I was trying hard not to be impatient or fidget, or close my eyes for other reasons. Why are so many Bollywood horror films so darn awful

Darr @ The Mall might be an absolute failure in the horror genre but as a revenge drama, it is refreshingly simple and does manage to pull a few heartstrings at the end of the day (sorry, Spike Lee). If you can look past the basic technical issues and focus on the story, Darr @ The Mall just might turn out to be slightly enjoyable. However, the enjoyment will only come after enduring a long, torturous film that doesn’t seem like it is going anywhere.

For a change, there are no vengeful witches (close enough), religious voodoo, Victorian castles, rapist ghosts or Vikram Bhatt.Within the confines of this stumbling genre, director Kirpalani does a decent job with a predictable script. No horror film should be more than 90 minutes long. At a whopping 125 minutes, this film is more about what it hasn’t done wrong than what it’s done right.

The script is so sketchy that you might get a migraine following it. There are several twists and turns in the second half that just don’t connect the dots. We wish if filmmakers had to reference Hollywood films they would do it effectively. The age-old trick of a creaking door or a sobbing child doesn’t work anymore. Even though the editing is tight, certain scenes and sub-plots were unnecessary. With a weak plot and shoddy execution Darr @ The Mall fails to raise a scare.

Darr@The Mall isnt entirely unwatchable but extremely repetitive plagued with loopy writing. The makers have fed us with every possible trick in the horror diktats and does so extremely tautly to its credit. It is entertaining if you can watch mindless horror films that fall back on familiar tropes to scare you. The fall-off-your-seats jumping moments are multiple and that allows ample room for you to relish your popcorn with another passable film. If not viewed critically, the film despite low novelty manages to deliver formulaic scares.
