An illiterate politician learns the value of education during his jail term. What an idea, sirjee. But why make it such a comic book-fantasy? Are the filmmakers telling us not to take their film seriously, undermining its message?

What gets in the way of the undeniably noble purpose of Dasvi is its awkwardly self-conscious earnestness. It approaches the job with too much seriousness and takes all the fun out of the exercise in the bargain. Dasvi, streaming on Jio Cinema and Netflix, is funny but for all the wrong reasons. By putting a literal spin on the re-education of a politician, it undermines the comic potential of the premise.

Ram Bajpai’s story is promising. Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair and Sandeep Leyzell’s screenplay, however, is poor. The film is intended to be a comic caper. However, there are hardly any funny moments in the film thatll make viewers laugh out loud. On the whole, DASVI rests on an interesting story and message and the impressive performances by the three leading actors. However, due to the flawed script, it turns out to be an average fare.

While the film has a few heart-warming moments, the character sketch and arcs arent well defined and that is a major cause of concern. What enables his wife and the jail superintendent to have the views they do. With no solid background, the awakening of conscience is abrupt and ineffective. With lack of context and a gradual buildup, it all feels like a poorly scripted play with overindulgence of the actors. To add to the bizarre, the film is a muddled hotchpotch of Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and even Hindi Medium.

The caricature approach that does no good to anyone involved and the efforts to make everything look vanilla so it approves as slice of life film does more harm. Not like you will walk out hating this one entirely, but if you can invest your time and pop corn in a half baked effort, you are free to go.

In all, the lack of a proper education system doesnt look like the real problem in Dasvi (and it was supposed to be that way). Even Gangaram’s speech about the importance of education didn’t evoke any emotion because the makers don’t let us take him seriously. Dasvi also seems rushed in the end. However, it makes us learn one important lesson – its never too late to learn something new!

The first half-hour races along then, on the strength of the amusing similarities, the naturally appealing cast, a sense of humour and the energy in the narrative. A light touch and vitality somewhat sustain the rest of the film too though it wears thin beyond a point under the weight of its limited substance.

Abhishek Bachchan and Yami Gautam are the only redeeming factors of Dasvi. The film only has a run-time of close to 130 minutes, which is great given the dearth of content. The lack of comic punches pull down Dasvi by several notches and you feel terrible as Abhishek Bachchan’s natural flair in that department is one of the best in the business.
