Ultimately, watching De De Pyaar De is a frustrating experience because while there are things to admire, including the unconventional ending, there is no escape from the lazy stereotypes, the simplistic moralising, and the episodic, sitcom-style screenplay. Yes I laughed, and it made me think. Some bits crackle too, but the film needed more of that. Im going with two-and-a-half out of five.

On the whole, De De Pyaar De will get abundant love from the audience and will prove to be a box-office winner. It may meet with a mixed response in the initial couple of days but it will finally be remembered as a wholesome entertainer praised for its difficult subject, praiseworthy scripting, mature handling and mind-blowing acting. It shouldnt be a surprise if the films remaking rights for different languages are in demand soon.

The primary problem is the girl. Aisha, a hard-drinking confident bartender-on-weekends, is played by Rakul Preet Singh, an unbelievably vacant actress entrusted with far too much screen time. This is a film that pretends to be brave. We have seen May-December romances before €” Balkis Cheeni Kum rushes to mind, another film held in place by an exquisite Tabu turn €” though heres the thing: the attempted radical ideas here lies not in the humdrum idea of an older man romancing a younger woman, but instead in these producers and a star like Devgn admitting he may be too old for the films he usually makes, and the heroines he stars with.

You wish the film had been braver in its intention of creating a really cracking rom-com, instead of playing its clich©s for a laugh. At his best, dialogue writer Luv Ranjan can pull off the difficult task of making actors sound like real people when they are in stormy, messy relationships, and those are the moments in which De De Pyaar De does best. Pity it didnt have more of those.

The film maturely handles a few touchy topics like divorce, live-ins and age-inappropriate romance, without getting too overbearing. Thankfully, director Akiv Ali wraps it up with a slightly unpredictable climax minus the melodrama. Overall, DDPD is a fun ride that reinstates the fact that when it comes to love, age is just a number.

The one good thing about De De Pyaar De (DDPD) is that it isnt slapstick. Its different yet funny. It attempts to tell a love story between a woman and a man double her age in a modern and realistic way. Of course, it needed more finesse. Its an enjoyable family watch; the frailties in human relationships are nicely captured.

Ajay Devgn’s return to the romantic comedy genre after 8 years has turned out to be an entertaining affair.The second half has some funny as well as powerful moments.Overall, De De Pyaar De is filled with many laugh out loud moments. The movie is uneven but fun, messy but entertaining thanks to the dialogues, Akiv Ali’s direction and the talented cast of Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh. Watch it.

DDPD is also one of the rare movies that make you root for the estranged couple, rather than the ones in love. Will Tabus character get her happy ending in life is a thought that could haunt you. While majority of the film is immensely entertaining, a few twists in the second half seem laboured and bizarre. But before it turned ludicrous, director Ali manages to rein things in.DDPD may not make you wiser in love, but its a clear indication that loving or losing someone is one gloriously complicated and messy affair. So, take a plunge with DDPD that doesnt scar you in any way.

Debutant director Akiv Ali has made a confusing film. The first half of the movie is still comic and understandable, but the second half seems to be a hotchpotch. The story is uncommon and can be relatable by the rich who live an extravagant lifestyle. For a middle class family or single screen audience, the movie is hard to digest. Also, it may be of interest to the men in 50s who wish for a younger girlfriend.
