Smug, sarcastic, and self-aware, hes nothing like the other guys. Hes a wisecracking antihero in a film that eschews the conventions of the genre. Far more daring, outrageous, and smart, compared to all those typical the-world-is-going-to-end comic book movies, Deadpool is the most fun Ive had at the cinema in a long time. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five. Itll bring out the 15-year-old in you.

Right from the opening credits itself you’ll find yourself realizing that this is the kind of superhero movie which is definitely different. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that it is a much-needed shot in the arm for the superhero genre in general. While there has been no shortage of comic book hero adaptations into film in recent times, Deadpool is one with a difference. In fact, what elevates this movie to another level is not just the snarky one-liners, but the plethora of cross-references to a lot of other superhero films as well. Supported by a very clever script, Deadpool is deliciously irreverent, subversive and uproariously funny.

One thing I can say for sure is that youve never seen something like Deadpool. Director Tim Miller and writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese take an unconventional hero and spin out a conventional superhero backstory — a doomed cancer-patient given a new, mutated lease of life — but the genius of Deadpool lies in the audacity of its storytelling. The films structure, which consists unprecedentedly of two primary scenes and a whole lot of flippantly-narrated flashback, is extraordinary.

I’d recommend this movie to anyone, disclaimers notwithstanding (no kids, and maybe… girlfriends with a really formidable sense of humour?), as something that’s so entertaining you won’t just watch from start to end (the end credits are hilarious, too) but even sit back for the right-at-the-end credits (that Marvel is notorious for). How often can you say that about any film? And then watch it twice after, to make sure you didn’t miss any of the dialogues or gags. I know I will.

Deadpool is not your grandfather’s superhero movie. Come to think of it, it isn’t your 13-year-old nephew’s superhero movie, either.Deadpool may not be the first Marvel character for grown-ups. But this “merc with a mouth,” as he’s known, feels like the first one with real teeth. I’ll wager he’s got legs, too. The fast-talking, funny and filthy superhero “sounds like a (expletive) franchise,” to use his own words. As with nearly everything else that comes out of the character’s mouth, it’s hard to argue.

On the whole, DEADPOOL is one part origin story, one part love story and whole lot of ass kicking action with brilliant, sharp, witty cuss filled humor of gore and theatricality with spot on yet subtle references to pop culture which is unmatched in this genre. A definite must watch for all superhero fans.

This is the kind of film Deadpool is – self aware, self-referential and in full Hollywood bashing mode. Deadpool is Foxs Guardians of the Galaxy, and its opened a whole new gateway for the superhero genre. Whether you have a date or not, make sure you celebrate Valentines Day at the multiplex playing this movie. Its a love story after all, with lubricated strap ons.
