The film is solid as far as the camera work and performances are concerned. Ali Fazal gets a substantial role and does ample justice to his character Andrew. He even pulls off the British accent perfectly. Gal Gadot infuses life into an otherwise dreary adaptation. Armie Hammers extra dusky makeup feels unnecessary but overall, the ensemble cast does well and they arent the problem here.
The film has its moments but it gathers steam a bit too late for your liking.

The only major miss in this thriller is in the depiction of the reveals. The slickness of the edit and crisp screenplay does not allow us to get into Poirot’s mind, the logic behind his deductions, the process by which he reaches certain conclusions is sacrificed perhaps for the pacing. However, this aside, Death on the Nile is an exquisitely made captivating film and I’m already waiting for Branagh’s next appearance as Poirot.

On the mood and feel front, the film does fall short, despite being consistently good to look at. I searched for conclusive evidence that at least some of the film was actually shot where it is set, but Im sorry to report that there seems to be almost none. The lighting and backgrounds reveal the over-reliance on sets, real and virtual. I imagine it would be wholly more immersive if they could have attempted to shoot large portions of the film on location, rather than relying on post-production magic. The difference is subtle but palpable, especially on the big screen. More than anything else, the template of this film isnt an unfamiliar one at all – if anything, it is probably just dead in the water.

His latest Agatha Christie adaptation is as dazzling as a display of fireworks and as fleeting as the trail of smoke that it leaves behind. Death on the Nile is entertaining but not ingenious enough a mystery movie in search of a genuine sense of mystery.
