A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:1.5/5  Review By: Rajeev Masand  Site: CNN IBN (IBNLive)

The sorry excuse for a script neither has a plot that makes much sense, nor action that feels real or tense, so its difficult to be emotionally invested in the characters or in whats going on on screen. Sure there are car chases, huge explosions, helicopter crashes, and never-ending gun fights, but its all such a blur because it has a videogame-like monotony to it. Im going with one-and-a-half out of five for A Good Day To Die Hard. Aside from the typical jokes about McClanes ageing, theres little else thatll make you smile here.

Diehard fans of Bruce Willis may not mind the shoddy CGI or poor story in this fifth installment of the franchise as he makes up for the flaws with his sheer presence, but somewhere, it’s still not enough. The film is a carnival of mindless action, which may appeal to the action junkies, provided you don’t expect ‘practicality’. The action scenes are not convincing enough to keep you engaged. They fail to create the tension required. Having said that, the film does not have dull moments either, the method in the madness is what is missing.

So well, I had expectations. Yes, Willis is still thumping the hell out of a truck load of bad guys and sending them home crying uncle. Yes, he is still blowing stuff up the good old John Mclain way. But something is missing. This is somehow, to put it bluntly, forced. Honestly, I would have liked some heart in this movie. The father-son chemistry is not so bad, but you soon get used to it and start predicting the next one-liner, and succeed. The action sequences are beyond a doubt breathtaking, but the cartoonish feel is logic defying and leaves you wanting for, er, something solid.

The iconic John McClane, played once again by Bruce Willis and McClane Junior, played by Jai Courtney, dodge bullets, cars, armored trucks and even a helicopter that smashes straight into their building. But they stand, smiling sardonically, a little bruised but always ready for another fight. This film is basically Rohit Shetty on steroids. This film is an endurance test. The action sequences have a banal incoherence. There arent any crackling one-liners. And the villains have none of the smooth menace that the best baddies in the first two Die Hard films had.

A Good Day to Die Hard is the weakest Die Hard film in the entire series.A lot has changed over the years as we are introduced to him in this latest installment of the franchise. There is so much wear and tear not physically but character wise that we end up feeling sorry for the guy. A Good Day to Die Hard ends up embarrassing its fans making you to wish Willis would earn his bread and butter doing other roles and let John McClane rest in peace (R.I.P).

With over-the-top action, crazy car chases and loud blasting action sets, John Moore`s A Good Day To Die Hard delivers the goods in explosions and destructions. Unfortunately, this franchise, the fifth in the series, deals with secret agent-cum-father-son bonding over gun shots and blasts, which seems more like a twist than a justifiable entry into the Die Hard series. Nevertheless, fighting bad guys under impossible odds is the basic outline, and a good one at that! A Good Day To Die Hard, as in previous Die Hard franchises Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Die Harder, Die hard With A Vengeance, Live Free Or Die Hard” — delivers enough where it counts to make up for its shortcomings. It is a grandiloquent action flick and nothing more. If you are a “die hard” fan of action flicks, then this one is a must-watch.
