The film is the latest silver screen adaptation of the 50-year-old legendary role-playing D&D game. Some may not know about Dungeons & Dragons, unless they’ve played it or were introduced to it via Netflixs Stranger Things. If you belong to neither, you can still enjoy it as a fantasy fable with some good humour and engaging action sequences. Those familiar with its roots are bound to get it more but its an enjoyable experience even for the ones clueless about the source material.

In the end, it really doesnt matter what comes first the dragon or the dungeon, or the dead who are not really dead since you know it will all turn out alright. Still, only the die-hard fans must brave this one.

Over the years and in recent times, we have seen great action-adventure fantasy movies and shows with eye-popping visual effects likeGame of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings and others. Talking about Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, this is a playful, adventurous affair, which works because of Chris Pines goofy charm and the perfect setting of the fantasy world.

The concept of magic is mined sporadically to gain some fantasy stakes. Shape-shifting, cross-portal deliverance, and chase sequences through mazes help make it seem gamey and play-worthy. Striking locations in Iceland and Northern Ireland make it all look inviting enough. The directors do the bare minimum to keep this attempt at entertainment afloat. A fairly coherent plot, decently choreographed action, real locations, and some rudimentary effects make it easy to digest if not entirely entertaining. At 134 mins runtime, it tends to become a drag at times. The lack of punch in the self-mockery and the flighty ungainly action makes it all so imminently forgettable too!

Another feather in D&D’s cap is that rarity in many blockbusters: a tight, well-thought-out script. What might initially seem like random events and throwaway gags are actually relevant later on and play an important role in the climax. It’s this solid base that lifts D&D above the average big-budget studio film.If the past few MCU movies have felt hollow and scattershot to you, treat yourself to this satisfying, feel-good adventure that will have you hoping for a sequel.

Nonetheless, Dungeons And Dragons: Honour Among Thieves remains a great time at the movies. A light-hearted breezy blockbuster that keeps the laughs coming. At a time when Hollywood is drowning in superheroes and exhausting Marvel vs DC discourse, a fun standalone blockbuster featuring tubby dragons desperately in need of a diet might just be the need of the hour.
