On the whole, Durgamati The Myth is too tame, far-fetched and implausible a drama to make any impact. It will not find much appreciation. Had it been released in the cinemas, it would not have fared too well.

Bhumi delivers with full sincerity, banging her head on walls, glaring and screaming, punishing herself with aplomb. But this is a logic-free story, which runs for a hundred and fifty-five minutes and no one could make it palatable. Director Ashok, who also directed the Telugu version, creates an almost frame-by-frame replica of the earlier film. Once again, the camera lunges, sways and heaves in all directions. Every tilted angle, ominous soundtrack and horror film cliche is utilized to create a creepy atmosphere. considering that there is little difference between the Telugu and Hindi version. Both are an endurance test.

In a world where politics is often synonymous to hooliganism to some and egalitarianism is an alien concept (again, to some), Durgamati does have a lesson or two to impart but the narrative and its storytelling technique is so bland that it slips through the cracks. A dialogue around strong ideologies including women empowerment is always welcome, but it could be delivered better.

On the whole, DURGAMATI rests on an interesting plot and is replete with some interesting scenes and an unpredictable twist in the second half. But the cinematic liberties are aplenty which hamper the impact. Also, Bhumi Pednekars performance is no way close to Anushka Shettys memorable act in BHAAGMATHIE. It will invite massive criticism from the subscribers of the OTT platform on which it has released. However, its sure to find an audience when itll premiere on satellite TV.

All said and done, Durgamati is an all-over-the-place horror-drama. The intent of adapting and remaking a good story is clearly missing. Its a horror of a film!

The political melodrama, expanded upon in flashbacks that push the running time beyond two and a half hours, promises a far cannier night in than we get. The horror element mostly finds Ashok rolling out tropes tried, tested and tired out in US features: Sinister-like film reels, genre-standard power cuts, hefty soundtrack parps when inspiration really fails. Pared down or sent up, it might have held the interest. As it is, Ashok plays it deadeningly straight, generating some very ripe, sub-sub-Hammer scenes as our heroine is possessed by the restless queens spirit. In this role, the capable Pednekar is limited to bellowing while someone points a wind machine in her face, and its really not as if the film needs to get any louder.

You were just beginning to get excited about new-age Bollywood horror after cutting-edge stuff as Stree and Tumbbad. Then came Laxmii, and now Durgamati — as rude reminder that Bollywood horror still has some way to go. Durgamati, crafted almost frame to frame from the 2018 Telugu-Tamil horror drama Bhagmathie, comes across as cliched melodrama more than next-level scare fest as it tries peddling horror with a message. The outcome is neither scary nor relevant commentary, for the societal ills the film tries highlighting are far too familiar as subject material on the mainstream screen to leave an impact.

One of the characters in Durgamati tells another, “Apne manzil tak pahuchne ke liya usne apne talent ka kaamal ka istamaal kiya.” Sadly, the same can’t be said about the film. Despite having a talented star cast, G. Ashok’s Bollywood directorial debut falls short of being a memorable scarefest due to lack of novelty and bland execution.
