But the film never finds its pulse. By the time we get to the idea of the Uni-Mind €” the ability of the Eternals to connect and amplify the power of any single Eternal €” deep fatigue has set in. There is ambition and beauty here but despite its many singular traits, the film feels bereft of a singular vision. Its neither properly a Chlo© Zhao film nor an MCU film. The film is the cinematic equivalent of the proverbial dhobi ka kutta. Na ghar ka na ghat ka.

Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo have written an interesting story which is based on Jack Kirbys Eternals. Although it talks about saving Earth, which has been seen in many earlier films, it still manages to offer some novelty in contentOn the whole, Eternals is a fair entertainer. However, it will not be able to realise its full potential due to poor showcasing (because of clash with Sooryavanshi which has been given the cream and maximum number of shows).

The end result of all this is a film that is not necessarily great, nor is it necessarily bad. It gets messy at times, both literally and figuratively, but Eternals is, overall, a fairly decent take into the more exotic parts of Marvel lore – if you …

Its a lot to pack into one film, even if it comes in at a long 2 hours and 36 minutes. Zhao, though, almost pulls it off, keeping a complex story that spans from outer universe to ancient Mesopotamia, via Bollywood of now, relatively uncomplicated. Her characters or Eternals also pack in genuine diversity, good acting and a warmth that is unusual to find in films such as it, which are more intent on impressing than winning over.

The change in narrative is both refreshing and complex for fans of the MCU. A franchise thats all about good versus evil, branching into internal good versus evil battle, taking on anonymous antagonists in an expansive plot, takes a while to sink in. To put it mildly, Zhao focusses on the inner strength of the Eternals and if you seek their external battles and power, Eternals can be sluggish and unmemorable. However, if you look for deeper meaning in life and visuals that heal; this film works its magic.

Eternals could have worked had it spent as much time in the writing room as it did in the VFX studio. For fans of the Marvel franchise, Eternals is no Avengers, dont go walking in with too many expectations, and you might have a decent time. Eternals has an army of superheroes but not one worth cheering for. Maybe next time?

Eternals is a movie that so desperately wants to have a soul, and be more than a hollow blockbuster, and I am grateful for that. But that soul and those heady ideas do not shine through the watered-down, spoonfed storytelling. But I came away appreciating that it dares to be different, rather than enjoying or being particularly moved by close to any of it. What value is there in making a sensitive, soulful superhero film if you don’t feel any of it?
