Rather than retracing the steps of its record-breaking predecessor, Frozen 2 tries some new thematic tricks. This time around, the surprisingly mature plot focuses on transformation and growing up. The films setup leading up to the climax appears to be promising, but its third act doesnt quite live up to expectations. The conflict resolution lacks a sense of impact and feels rushed. This is particularly baffling since the first half tends to meander, focusing on songs than on purposefully furthering the plot.

It is also the kind of film that warrants a theatrical visit for the full experience of a big screen and thundering sound to sway you into submission even if films like these have massive potential for home video and streaming. In a year packed with some beefy but mostly belly flop big-budget movies, Frozen 2 truly stands out as an event film because its the rare sequel that delivers on the holy grail combo of intrigue, familiarity, and heart; youll be hard-pressed to find another animation film this year that offers all three in dollops.

What could Elsa and Anna do that would surpass that? Clearly, directors Buck and Lee, back for the sequel (like its cast of voices), are as confused. Frozen II packs a conservation message with dollops of wonky mythology, flashbacks which eerily manifest as literally frozen thoughts, and spirits that swirl up some real neat tricks, without coming anywhere close to real magic. And while magic seemed so tangible in Frozen, here the effort shows as the film drags on.

Frozen 2 is spectacular to look at and the sharp witty characters easily manage to hook the audience. Even if you are not into fairy-tales, with its surprising plot it will give a good theatrical experience. It is better than the first part and is a fun entertainer to watch with family. In case you have missed the first part, don’t worry, you have Olaf to narrate the entire story to you in less than 30 seconds in quite a fun way.In all, don’t miss it, because Elsa and Anna’s tribe is worth melting for.
