George Miller and Nico Lathouris have penned a story and screenplay, which abound in action. However, other than the action, the drama holds the attention of the viewers only intermittently. The proceedings also get boring at times. On the whole, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is not exactly the kind of film which would catch the fancy of the Hindi film-going audience.

Set in a dystopian future, a prequel to 2015’s Oscar winning blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa is an origin story that rides high on emotion, feminist intent, and insane action. Furiosa speaks of a distant future where mankind goes rogue, and people must endure uninhabitable conditions to survive. Lack of water, extreme heat, no food, no compassion. This strangely feels closer to reality than we would like to accept. This film deserves a big screen experience. This is action at its best.

For all those who are gratified by grandeur, Furiosa: Mad Max Saga is worth the price of your tickets. For those who derive pleasure out of dense plot and narrative, try for another saga.

Hardcore fans of Mad Max will find a great deal to like here, but if you are the sort of filmgoer who expects much more from George Miller, you will be left feeling shortchanged. This Mad Max saga is mad enough but it isn’t driven by the sort of manic force that propelled Fury Road.

For another, it’s hard to get the fabulous Theron out of our heads. As a hero of mythic proportions– woman-saviour-fighter, a fount of feminine energy– you can’t get better. Nothing in this pale prequel matches up, despite all its pedal-to-the-metal forays, and it comes off as a monumental dud.

Despite being Furiosa’s tale, Chris Hemsworth steals the spotlight. His portrayal of the vile, self-obsessed and cruel Dementus is compellingly repulsive.Anya Taylor-Joy, though given few lines, conveys Furiosa’s fierce determination through her expressive performance. Tasked with living up to Charlize Theron’s iconic role, Taylor-Joy keeps us invested in Furiosa’s journey, delivering a remarkable portrayal. Aylyla Browne, as young Furiosa, also impresses with her performance, showcasing bravery and innocence amidst the chaos.

A Mad Max Saga works as long as it sees a clear road ahead from the top of the desert, but loses focus when it decides to listen to the thunderous beats of the vehicle it built in the first place. Furiosa contradicts and dazzles, infuriates, and sets the screen on fire. It is still a welcome thrill to witness the director taking risks, and asking, ‘Shall we see, where the road ends?’

Dementus is a superb character, as flamboyant as he is demented, and Hemsworth plays him just right. By contrast, Anya Taylor-Joy is a misfit. Taylor-Joy’s lack of resemblance between her and Charlize Theron hangs over the performance. The ensemble cast of dreadfully behaved thugs fit more snugly into Miller’s gleefully off-kilter world than the talented Taylor-Joy.
