G. I. JOE 2: RETALIATION MOVIE REVIEW

Many believe that hiring Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, to star in 2011s Fast Five, was the genius idea that salvaged a flagging franchise. The same trick, however, doesnt work for GI Joe: Retaliation which, as it turns out, is even more awful than 2009s disappointing GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra. While you cant really be surprised by the absence of compelling characters or the lack of emotional depth in the story given that the GI Joe films are based on a kids toy theres no excuse why Retaliation is such a dull enterprise, or why it doesnt even deliver a sense of guilty pleasure. If only the plot made a smidgen of sense!GI Joe: Retaliation feels way longer than its running time. Its an exercise in futility; a film that has no business existing in the first place. Im going with one out of five. Stay home and take a nap instead.

The Joes get sent to Pakistan to retrieve nuclear warheads but it all goes horribly wrong with the ‘enemy’ possibly being their own President. But why would he do that, right? To his credit, Chu doesn’t disappoint, keeping your interest in the film unwavering at a sharp 115 minutes. For those unfamiliar with the characters, there’s a visual introduction at the start. The action sequences impress and the banter is at par with the standard fare dished out these days. That being said, this one’s worth the price of the ticket and the 3D’s actually not unnecessarily painful. Give it a shot. After all, revenge flicks are such guilty pleasures, no?

G.I Joe: Retaliation is a staggeringly dull action movie that slowly pummels you into surrender. Fifteen minutes into the film, you figure its not going to get better. The dialogue will continue to consist of grunts and lines like: The cobra revolution has begun. Instead of characters, we will get cartoon figures with names like Roadblock and Storm Shadow. Instead of thrilling action sequences, we will get absurd CGI set-pieces including one in which London is blown up. If you are 13 years old, this might be fun. I was bored. Im going with two stars.

While many action enthusiasts arent happy about the film being shot using the latest 3-D technology, the cleverly devised and executed stunts had us rooting for more. GI Joe: Retaliation unashamedly caters to the GI Joe fans and youre expected to know who the Joes are, what they do in life, and why the Cobra Commander is one of the most dreaded people on earth. This film has been planned as a summer outing for the kiddos who saved their pocket money to acquire yet another G I Joe figure with all the accompanying paraphernalia such as tanks. The sophisticated action will have twelve-year olds gasping in their seats while the adult audience will be instantly transported to their childhood. So this weekend pull out your 3-D glasses and stock up on the popcorn for a 110-minute joyride. One thing we guarantee, you wont get bored.

What are the G.I. Joes doing in all this? Well the imposter US President has them attacked and decimated in the aforementioned Indus Valley desert so as to ensure no one stands between him and his plans. But, of course, three survive, among them Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The other big ticket marquee name, Channing Tatum (Willis is trademark Willis in a 10-minute appearance), apparently dies but the film very carefully leaves that ambiguous. It’s a big desert. A sequel or two, anything can happen out there. After G.I. Joe: Retaliation, anything.

Several notches above its 2009 predecessor (Rise of the Cobra), director Jon M.Chu resurrects the G.I. Joe series taking it to a new level of splendor and special effect wizardry. Despite the sleekness of its visuals (3D works wonderfully and doesn’t give you a headache) there are stumbles along the way. Second half has severalfiller moments leading to the big boom in the climax. Also the suspense and tension in the film seems plastic leading. It doesn’t have the brilliance of Avengers or charisma of an Iron Man, yet G.I. Joe: Retaliation manages to gives you the right bang for your buck.

Now with G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the franchise has once again come up with an action-packed adventure which the audience will enjoy, provided the expectations arent high.On the other hand, if one goes expecting the flavor of action-packed big budget flicks, they will enjoy it. Although it cant be denied that sometimes the film becomes unintentionally funny, this is nonetheless the G.I. Joe world and everybody is invited to get entertained. Verdict: A notch above the previous G.I. Joe movie, this is good Hollywood entertainment.
