Although the drama has its share of light moments, it doesnt evoke much laughter because the humour is laced with a tinge of fear. Secondly, since the story-line is thin, scenes start getting repetitive, robbing the drama of the humour quotient. In fact, the portion of Jerry delivering drugs has been stretched too much. Likewise, the climax is also unduly lengthy and robs it of its inherent fun quotient. The excitement of a thriller is completely missing if only because the pace of the drama is terribly slow. On the whole, Goodluck Jerry is an ordinary fare with a unidimensional story. It will, therefore, not meet with great response from the public.

While we are at it, though, we cant help noting the slippage of Kapoors Bihari accent. But theres no doubt that she leads the way, letting that small triumphant smile emerge, even though she is made to snivel too much, the flood of tears nearly overcoming the general air of fun and frolic. And thats the best part of Good Luck Jerry, a film that commits to its loopiness, without finding an excuse to get the men in front of its fiesty women. Good for Jerry aka Jaya Kumari aka Janhvi Kapoor.

Director Sidharth Gupta’s remake of Nelson’s Tamil drama, Kolamaavu Kokila, penned by Pankaj Matta, tries hard to be in the same quirky, dicey space as Ishqiya and Udta Punjab, but its vapid humour and designed whimsy over small-town transgressions never lets Good Luck Jerry become more than the sum of its parts. Part of the problem is a protagonist too opaque for her own good. One keeps waiting for the layers to peel, the mask to slip, the steel to show but the complexity is always implied never felt.

The laugh riot is replete with way-out situations and every kooky character is hilarious. Director Siddharth Sengupta keeps the narrative taut, and turns the situation more curious when Jerrys family is lured into the business. However, towards the end, the film gets monotonous and convoluted with scenes that do not take the story ahead. The longish sequence where Jerry is mistaken to be getting assaulted was jarring and seemed forced to crank up the hilarity. Good Luck Jerry is a hilarious and entertaining fare that would have been perfect if it were a tad shorter.

When I walked out of the screening of Good Luck Jerry, I had to take a minute to wrap my head around what I had just watched. Its been a while since I watched a film that I truly enjoyed. Theres been a number of movies that have been released this year €” a mix of experimental films that have somewhat managed to achieve what they set out for and some downright bad movies that made me question my life decisions. But when I walked out of Good Luck Jerry, I felt like I walked out of a pre-pandemic Aanand L Rai or Priyadarshan film, and what a good feeling it was!

A by-the-numbers first half, followed by a moderately funny second half that’s eventually dragged down by way too many flaws and loopholes and a badly directed climax, further compounded by Janhvi Kapoor’s complete inepitude in emoting and lack of screen presence, only to be saved somewhat by a more than competent supporting cadt that’s Disney Hotstar’s Good Luck Jerry in a nutshell for you. I’m going with 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Adapted from Kolamaavu Kokila, a Telugu film that starred Nayanthara, Good Luck Jerry is the better version of the story. Janhvi Kapoor is proving herself film after film. I hope she only gets better at her craft. The film as a whole is a fun watch and has its own amazing moments. Go in and enjoy the ride.

Good Luck Jerry attempts to trim the bloat that weighted down the original movie. Lost in the streamlining are the quirks and layers that could have made Jerrys journey more engaging. The unevenly paced film simply isnt invested enough in Jerrys mission to make it seem unusual or life-altering.
